The Clinical Nurse Specialist is an influential leader for a program or area of nursing practice. The advanced knowledge and skills required for this role include clinical expertise in a focus area, evidence-based practice, collaboration, consultation, education, mentoring and change leadership. The specialized knowledge and advanced practice nursing skills are used within three major areas of impact: patient/family, nurses and nursing practice and the organization/system.In collaboration with other members of the health care team, the CNS leads, provides, enhances and improves health care delivery by evaluating nursing practices, developing methodologies, establishing standards of care and providing consultative services. The CNS is a clinical expert in the theory-based and/or research-based nursing practice within a specialty area.Clinical Nurse Specialists are REQUIRED to obtain their nursing administration or professional/specialty certification within 12 months of assuming the role, or within 12 months of achieving eligibility to sit for the exam if not eligible upon hire in to the role.
Essential Functions
Conducts comprehensive and holistic patient assessment using advanced practice nursing skills. Advises on pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for individuals or populations. Identifies problem situations or issues in patient care. Rounds in clinical area(s) and identifies high risk and problem prone cases for consultation and intervention. Synthesizes, interprets, makes decisions and recommendations, and evaluates responses on the basis of complex sources of data. Decisions made are based on ethical principles that support the patient and family/significant others and the health care team. Uses the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide practice.
Leads and facilitates coordination of intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams to develop or revise programs focused on group or systems issues.
Serves as a role model, teacher, coach and mentor for both professional leadership and accountability for nursing's role within the healthcare team and community. Ensures practice is in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code. Provides influential leadership in a manner that is culturally sensitive and preserves autonomy, dignity and rights of patient's, families and staff.
Builds relationships with multidisciplinary team members and influences change to advance the level of clinical practice and service. Communicates, collaborates, networks and acts as a consultant to key internal and external stakeholders to ensure continuity, coordination of services and appropriate utilization of resources.
Identifies and communicates resources, both internal and external (e.g., consultants, referrals, community programs, and other healthcare systems) to optimize outcomes for patients and families.
Leads and supports system groups to enrich the practice of nursing, improve patient outcomes and clinical efforts to achieve quality outcomes. Develops, pilots, evaluates and incorporates innovative models of practice across the healthcare system and throughout transitions of patient care. Identifies and participates in data collection, utilizes data to measure and evaluate outcomes, and implements process measure and evaluate outcomes, and implements process improvement methodologies to achieve outcome targets. Collaborates with nursing leadership to assure that processes and services are continuously monitored for quality, cost effectiveness and efficiency. Collaborates to create, coordinate, implement and evaluate formal and informal intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary education to improve patient outcomes and quality of care.
Evaluates current and innovative practices in patient care on the basis of evidence-based practice, research, and experiential knowledge. Incorporates evidence-based practice guidelines, research and experiential knowledge to formulate, evaluate, and/or revise algorithms, policies, procedures, pathways and protocols. Facilitates processes of change within the healthcare system to provide evidence-based, cost effective care. Provides expertise to guide use of technology, products and devices within the specialty area.
Leads in the conduct and application of nursing research and implementation of evidence based practice. Works with staff to identify areas of clinical inquiry or research opportunities and disseminates, presents or publishes relevant findings. Promotes value of lifelong learning and evidence-based practice while continually acquiring knowledge and skills needed to address questions arising in practice to improve patient care.
Qualifications
Required Master's Degree in Nursing Practice from an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialist Program OR
Required Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) or from an accredited Clinical Nurse Specialist Program OR
Required Master's Degree in Nursing - ONLY if Clinical Nurse Specialty certification is obtained through the state of Michigan via portfolio submission of evidence that demonstrates knowledge and skill competence in the clinical nurse specialist role. (specialty certification is on the nursing license)
5 years of relevant experience Clinical Nursing Required
