Job Description Summary
This position is responsible for supporting the digital marketing and communication initiatives of Advancement and Alumni Engagement in support of University priorities. Specific focus will be on annual giving and alumni engagement initiatives. Under the direction of the Director for Advancement and Alumni Engagement Communications, this position helps to effectively use the web, mass email, and social media to communicate with and engage alumni and friends to promote their involvement with and investment in Michigan Technological University.
This position promotes stories about students, alumni, donors, faculty, and campus traditions to further Michigan Technological University's philanthropic initiatives.
In collaboration with the Advancement and Alumni Engagement team, this position manages digital marketing and communication initiatives including direct solicitations, events, and special projects.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
• Generate, edit, publish, and share engaging digital content regularly for a variety of audiences (alumni, donors, corporate sponsors, students, and more), with a focus on fundraising and alumni engagement based content.
• Produce compelling content (e.g. original text, photos, videos, and news) for the Advancement and Alumni Engagement websites (mtu.edu), social media, blogs, alumni enewsletter, the University's online daily internal newsletter, etc.
• Interview alumni, donors, students, faculty, and staff for writing assignments for print publications and online profiles.
Mass Email Communications
• Using email software tools (MyEmma, Ellucian CRM Advance SparkPost, etc.) create and deploy mass emails to alumni and friends. This includes Alumni Reunion and regional event communications.
Social Media
• Manage the social network presence of Advancement and Alumni Engagement, including the Annual Fund. In collaboration with colleagues, design and implement social media strategy to align with Advancement and Alumni Engagement goals.
• Implement a social media content editorial calendar to manage content and plan specific, timely marketing campaigns across all platforms to provide a constant supply of relevant content. Ensure that approaches to social media are relevant and appropriate for each medium.
• Promote content through social advertising and maximize followers on social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Implement new features such as promotions and contests to develop brand awareness.
• Engage with digital followers, respond to queries in a timely manner, and monitor and respond to comments and inquiries.
Analytics and Research
• Continuous research into advances in digital technologies and trends in social media, web design tools, and social media platforms.
• Perform research on current benchmark trends and audience preferences, monitor SEO and web traffic metrics. Set specific objectives and build reporting frameworks to evaluate return on investment on the various platforms.
Other
• Participate in departmental strategic planning and advise colleagues on appropriate high impact digital communications.
• Develop collaborative relationships with University partners and work with them to create innovative communications and ensure brand consistency.
• Edit own work and that of other team members. Understand and adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style and the University's style, social media, and brand guides.
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
• Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, English, communications, marketing, or a related field from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
• Experience with implementing digital marketing and communication strategies.
• Professional writing experience in a variety of formats, preferably with experience in creative/integrated marketing writing (a creative portfolio will be required).
• Professional experience managing social media accounts, websites, or other digital content.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
• Experience working in higher education, fundraising, or alumni relations administration.
• Experience working with clients, designers, photographers, and printers.
• Experience with philanthropic writing or with fundraising campaign marketing.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
• Demonstrated ability to use graphic design software.
• Knowledge of content management systems and web design.
• Excellent copywriting/editing skills, including web/social media content.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver creative content (text, image, and video).
• Demonstrated ability to conform writing style to different audiences and distribution channels.
• Understanding of digital technologies and social media trends.
• Familiarity with web design.
• Knowledge of digital marketing tactics and branding, including SEO, email marketing, keyword research, and Google Analytics.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and meet multiple deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to multitask with sometimes shifting priorities.
• Demonstrated understanding of the interrelationship of content and design, and the complementary nature of multichannel communication.
• Demonstrated adherence to journalistic standards for fact-finding, research, verification, and style.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across cultures and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
• Experience coding web pages and digital communications (HTML).
• Experience using WordPress and social media scheduling applications.
• Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style.
• Proficiency with InDesign and Photoshop.
• Proficiency with Mac computers.
• Familiarity with mass email deployment tools, email marketing, and workflow technology.
