Purpose:
The Safety Specialist position is responsible for working with operations, maintenance, staff functions, and Union Leadership to develop initiatives and programs promoting safe work practices and improvements. Work with Safety and Operations to ensure compliance with all applicable safety and health regulations.
Key Accountabilities:
Provide leadership to support and assist all levels of management in achieving the facility and corporate goals for reduction of work-related injuries. Zero injuries is our goal.
Assist in planning, creating, and implementing programs and processes to maintain a workplace that meets or exceeds federal and state safety requirements.
Expert in regulatory requirements, industry standards and local safety matters including integration of Health/Safety Best Practices into the mill.
Ensures a proactive approach to injury prevention.
Support mill Keys to Success.
Demonstrate Verso Foundation leadership behaviors.
Lead safety training and initiatives.
Coordinate mill Safety initiatives with hourly Safety Department Team Members.
Possess ambulatory capabilities to move around the mill, climb ladders, and catwalks.
Assist with the Process Safety Management Program and program improvements.
Required Skills
Minimum Required Skills:
Effective communication and leadership skills as well as demonstrated abilities to champion change and influence others at all levels of the organization are required.
Lead and manage the mill's hourly Safety Department Team Members.
Safety Leadership abilities with demonstrated effectiveness in management role in an industrial safety environment.
Ability to give encouragement, guidance, and direction to improve safety performance.
Ability to listen generously and practice open advocacy.
Ability to inspire and guide others toward identifying and achieving vision and goals.
Assist with the mill's Process Safety Management (PSM) Program and Risk Management Program (RMP).
Manage the mill's Industrial Hygiene Sampling Process, Contractor Safety Program and safety initiatives.
Conduct audits of the facility's safety policies and procedures.
Additional duties as assigned by the Safety Manager.
Required Experience
Associate's degree or higher in Safety & Health or related field with 2 - 5 years' experience will be considered.
Previous experience in a union environment with an excellent safety performance record is highly desired.
Previous experience with PSM, RMP and/or Industrial Hygiene knowledge preferred.
