Apprenticeship Program Job Description

Our facilities manufacture everything from the stamping of pressed metal parts into fenders, hoods and doors, to the casting, machining and development of the world's best engines and transmissions and finally to vehicle assembly, where everything comes together for paint, trim, fit and finish.
Electrician
As a UAW-GM Apprentice Electrician you will learn what it takes to keep a world class manufacturing facility operating at peak capacity. Starting with electrical basics such AC/DC fundamentals and elementary circuits you will quickly be immersed into all types of automated material handling systems, high speed industrial robotics, programmable logic controllers and all varieties of peripheral computer controlled systems through high speed network communication.
You may have the opportunity to learn and utilize preventative and predictive maintenance techniques and practices, including the use of laser alignment, ultrasound, thermography, high speed video, vibration analysis and electric motor diagnostic tools and equipment. An electrical apprentice is often the first responder in the event of machine faults and learns to communicate effectively with other tradespersons in a fast paced team driven environment.
As with all US-DOL registered apprenticeship training programs, the electrical apprentice will enroll in, and complete required classroom training curriculum outlined by their local joint apprentice committee. The course work will require at least 592 hours of Related Technical Instruction in a classroom setting and 7920 hours of On the Job Training with an assigned qualified Electrical Journeyperson.
Mechanical
A UAW-General Motors Mechanical Group Apprentice may have the opportunity to learn to make repairs and maintain a variety of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic components This may include diagnosis and repair of material handling systems, robotic mechanisms, and their peripherals. You will learn:
To follow blueprints and specifications using various hand-tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments
To visually inspect and listen to machines and equipment to locate a root cause of malfunction.
Proper inspection and measurement of parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other problems
To remove and replace worn or defective parts of drive mechanisms or hydraulic systems, using appropriate tools all while referring to blueprints, diagrams, and service manuals to guide your decisions.
A UAW-GM mechanical apprentice may utilize predictive and preventative maintenance equipment such as laser alignment, vibration analysis and thermographic inspection to assist in learning to make diagnostic troubleshooting decisions to help keep their equipment producing high-quality cars and trucks.
The mechanical apprenticeship requires at least 640 hours of Related Technical Instruction in a classroom setting and 7920 hours of On the Job Training with an assigned qualified Journeyperson with many years of craftwork experience.
Engineering / Die Making Trades
The engineering apprentice may learn what it takes to bring a vehicle from the computer screen to the showroom floor. Working through the design and development stages all the way through product/prototype testing and information gathering an engineering apprentice will work in a team environment to help with the development of tomorrow's world class cars and trucks.
A UAW-GM Die Maker Apprentice may learn to build, repair, remodel, and maintain all types of dies using various types of material: metals, alloys, plastics, etc. Die Maker Apprentices will learn to lay out working from blueprints, drawings and computerized designs to very tight tolerance levels using precision measurement tools and techniques.
An Engineering or Die Maker apprenticeship requires at least 608 hours of Related Technical Instruction in a classroom setting and 7328 hours of On the Job Training with an assigned qualified Journeyperson.
