Summary:
The Pre-analytical Specialist demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Keeping our Promise of Caring.
This individual has the documented training appropriate for the pre-analytical phase of patient testing and limited waived laboratory testing. The training insures the skills required for proper specimen collection, handling, processing, and transport. Training and competency are documented for limited laboratory testing, proper instrument use, and performance of preventative maintenance and quality control policies under the supervision of the Medical Technologist. The Laboratory Medical Director authorizes performance of waived analytical procedures.

Assists in the training of new employees under direct control of the General Supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Performs all necessary clerical duties including, but not limited to, answering telephones, filing, scheduling, computerized order entry, collection of draw or test fees, and registration of patient orders on AS400 and CERNER LIS while maintaining excellent customer service.
Maintains proper communication with physicians, nursing staff, laboratory personnel, coworkers, supervision and administration.
Delivers Laboratory reports to nursing units and outpatient treatment areas.
Collects all specimens by venipuncture, skin puncture, nasopharyngeal and throat swabs, and other approved collection methods, upon physician order in a timely fashion utilizing proper technique.
Collects general lab samples from draw ports (Peripheral IV saline locks), assists nursing with collections from vascular access devices, maintains documentation of training and proficiency.
Verifies collection information on computer and documentation on log sheets
Follows laboratory procedures for the processing and transportation of all laboratory specimens with all necessary documentation included.
Inspects all specimens prior to transport, for proper labeling requirements and specimen type.
Transports specimens via the most appropriate method to ensure turn-around-time is met; utilizing the pneumatic tube system, courier system, or physical transportation to the Laboratory.
Adheres to the laboratory quality control policies. Documents all activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed, including troubleshooting
Follows laboratory procedures for specimen suitability for testing. Performs waived and moderate complexity testing authorized by the Medical Director and ordered by a physician or authorized personnel using approved methodology.
Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results. Immediately notifies the General Supervisor or designated Laboratory Charge Medical Technologist who will correct the problem or immediately notify the Technical Supervisor.
Complies with all Covenant and Laboratory policies, procedures, and safety practices. Demonstrates working knowledge of appropriate safety protocol to include universal precautions, MSDS safety program, use of personal protective equipment in designated areas, and performs proper hand washing techniques.
Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
Performs EKGs and additional clinical testing, as determined and approved by Laboratory Manager, following proper procedures and protocols.
Performs diagnostic procedures, such as audiometric testing, pulmonary function testing, breath alcohol testing, and drug screen collections with chain of custody, in working with Occupational Health.
Performs Registration and Ordering of Patients/specimens using Epic, Cerner Millennium, and Systoc (as needed in working with Occupational Health) computer systems.

Education
College level Biology or Chemistry
High School education or equivalent.
Completion of a NACCLS approved or two-part formal phlebotomy program.
ASCP Phlebotomy certification within 6 months of hire.
Skills
Computer Applications, strong verbal and communication skills.
Credentials
ASCP Phlebotomy certification within 6 months of hire.
Experience
1 3 years phlebotomy experience
