Purpose:The Eat Safe Fish Community Outreach Educator (ESF CO) will play a critical role in meeting bureau goals related to providing relevant and timely public health protective information and resources related to the Eat Safe Fish program throughout Michigan.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Attend public events in Michigan related to water and fish recreation to inform the public about safe fish consumption.
Attend events focused in areas near waterbodies targeted by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to distribute safe fish consumption information.
Engage with community members, underserved populations, and anglers at predetermined fishing events to distribute Eat Safe Fish materials.
Conduct presentations to community partners to promote the Eat Safe Fish Program.
Distribute Eat Safe Fish information with non-traditional community partners.
Build and maintain connections with community partners to effectively communicate protective health information and Eat Safe Fish resources.
Interact with the public via meetings, conferences, telephone conversations, and community visits.
Work closely with EGLE, outreach technicians, and community leaders to identify meaningful ways to engage with the targeted population.
Collaborate with the Health Education unit to ensure deliverables are developed to meet the needs of the targeted population.
Maintain positive relationships with community members, groups, and stakeholders.
Participate in program planning, development, implementation, and evaluation.
General administrative duties as needed.
Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major.
Experience: No specific type or amount is required. Experience implementing or overseeing outreach and/or community engagement programs/projects is preferred.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical requirements consistent with a standard office environment. Transport supplies to sites around the state on an occasional basis. Items and supplies can be bulky and weigh up to 40lbs. May go door-to-door to educate residents and may be exposed to cold or wet weather conditions.
Requires valid vehicle operator's license and travel within the State, including evenings, weekends, or occasional overnights. Less frequently, travel may be required outside the State.
Attendance at meetings and events outside of the assigned workspace will be required. Some activities or events may be held outside of typical business hours or on weekends.
Travel: This position will require regular travel throughout the state of Michigan. Sometimes including nights and weekends.
Responsibility for the Work of Others: No assigned responsibility.
IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES, AND OPERATIONS: This position is funded by a limited term project plan (three years).The person in this position interacts with the public via meetings, telephone conversations, and events. This position is funded by a limited term. The person in this position will interact with the public via one-on-one in person conversations. Overall, this position is responsible for promoting and distributing MDHHS-provided educational materials on safe fish consumption in "areas of concern", and throughout various communities in Michigan.
