Are you a seasoned Tool Maker with a strong background in mold repair, fabrication, and hands-on machining? Our client, an established leader in manufacturing, is seeking a highly skilled Mold Repair - Journeyman to join their Molding Department on 3rd shift. This role offers the opportunity to work in a precision-driven environment where your craftsmanship directly supports production quality and innovation.
You'll be responsible for constructing and repairing injection molds, jigs, fixtures, and precision gauges. This position combines technical challenge with hands-on execution, including CNC operation, welding, heat treating, and blueprint interpretation. You'll also influence mold design and support preventive maintenance efforts-making your role critical to operational success.
Responsibilities:
- Interpret blueprints, schematics, and machine manuals to build and repair tools, molds, and fixtures.
- Fabricate parts using manual and CNC machines (lathes, mills, drill presses, etc.) with or without detailed prints.
- Perform heat treating processes, including hardening, annealing, and drawing of steels.
- Conduct precision handwork inside molds to achieve tight tolerances (as close as 0.0001").
- Use welding, spotting, peening, and polishing techniques for detailed tool repairs.
- Disassemble and inspect molds for preventive maintenance; replace springs, pins, hydraulics, etc.
- Communicate with suppliers on tooling specifications, improvements, and repairs.
- Support design improvements by consulting on vents, gates, and core placements.
- Operate various shop equipment and powered industrial vehicles.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safety-focused work environment.
- Complete mold documentation and maintenance records accurately.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, production, and maintenance teams.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of a U.S. Department of Labor certified 4-year apprenticeship program (Journeyman Tool & Die Maker)
- Valid powered industrial truck (PIT) operator permit (or ability to obtain).
- Proficient in blueprint reading, mechanical troubleshooting, and measuring tools.
- Strong understanding of injection molding, mold design & repair.
Preferred Traits & Experience:
- Familiarity with mold texturing, glass spotting, and insert work.
- Background in CNC programming or CAD software.
- Experience with hydraulic, pneumatic, or electronic mold systems.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and performing physically demanding tasks.
