Position Summary
The Systems Engineering Architect is a senior technical leader responsible for the design, standardization, and strategic oversight of Ryder's infrastructure platforms across on-premises and multi-cloud environments. This role focuses on architecting resilient, secure, and scalable infrastructure solutions that support high-volume, mission-critical business applications. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in VMware-based on-premises architecture, infrastructure security, and cloud migration strategies. This individual will collaborate with Enterprise Architecture, Security, and IT Operations to ensure infrastructure designs align with business goals, compliance requirements, and operational excellence.
Essential Responsibilities
Infrastructure Architecture Leadership : Define and maintain enterprise infrastructure standards across compute, storage, virtualization, database, and security domains. Ensure alignment with industry best practices and Ryder's operational, security, and compliance requirements.
VMware On-Premises Expertise : Lead the design and optimization of VMware-based infrastructure, including vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and Horizon. Ensure high availability, performance, and scalability of on-prem workloads while planning for lifecycle management and modernization.
Platform Design & Integration : Architect hybrid infrastructure solutions that integrate on-premises systems with public cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, OCI, GCP). Ensure seamless interoperability, workload portability, and consistent policy enforcement across environments.
Infrastructure Security Architecture : Collaborate with security teams to embed security-by-design principles into infrastructure blueprints. Define controls for identity, access, encryption, segmentation, and vulnerability management across on-prem and cloud platforms.
Cloud Migration Strategy : Lead infrastructure assessments and develop migration roadmaps for transitioning workloads from on-premises to cloud. Evaluate application dependencies, cost models, and security implications to ensure successful transformation.
Architecture Governance : Develop and enforce enterprise-wide infrastructure patterns, blueprints, and reference architectures. Govern adherence to standards across IT initiatives and ensure consistency in design and implementation.
Solution Enablement : Partner with application and business teams to enable scalable infrastructure solutions that support digital transformation, automation, and modernization efforts.
Lifecycle Management : Oversee the full lifecycle of infrastructure technologies-from evaluation and adoption to retirement-ensuring cost-effectiveness, security, and operational readiness.
Strategic Planning : Contribute to long-term infrastructure roadmaps and capacity planning. Provide architectural input for major programs, M&A integrations, and enterprise initiatives.
Risk & Cost Analysis : Evaluate infrastructure proposals for feasibility, cost, risk, and resource impact. Provide recommendations that balance innovation with operational stability.
Documentation & Communication : Develop and maintain logical, physical, and conceptual architecture diagrams. Communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Additional Responsibilities
Lead infrastructure portfolio management, including roadmap development, standards governance, and lifecycle planning.

Cloud & Hybrid Infrastructure : Strong understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, OCI, GCP) and hybrid integration patterns. Experience with workload migration, cloud landing zones, and hybrid networking.
Security Architecture : Knowledge of infrastructure security principles including zero trust, segmentation, encryption, identity and access management, and vulnerability management.
Technical Breadth : Proficiency in infrastructure technologies including servers, storage (SAN/NAS), backup, patching, monitoring, and disaster recovery.
Strategic Thinking : Ability to align infrastructure architecture with business goals and enterprise strategy.
Decision-Making : Skilled in evaluating trade-offs and making data-driven decisions that balance innovation, cost, and risk.
Collaboration & Influence : Proven ability to build partnerships across IT and business teams. Comfortable influencing without direct authority.
Agility & Adaptability : Able to navigate change, manage ambiguity, and pivot strategies as needed in a dynamic enterprise environment.
Communication : Strong written and verbal communication skills. Able to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
