Mechanical Application Engineer -- Hudsonville, MI –

The Mechanical Application Engineer is a key member of our Sales Team. There is great exposure to a wide range of new customers, varied products and high tech equipment. Application Engineers confer with the sales team in conceptualizing and estimating costs of new projects. They collaborate closely with the sales, purchasing, project management, manufacturing, and engineering teams to determine correct engineering, material, and labor costs for the assigned projects. This is a high impact full time and direct role with competitive compensation and a Total Rewards package.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conceptualize, lay out, and present ideas for automation projects.
- Estimate costs to design and build custom automation projects.
- Analyze parts, part data, part drawings, machine designs and other documentation to provide accurate and detailed project kick-off.
- Manage time and activities to meet stringent deadlines and estimating schedules.
- Quantify any and all special considerations captured during project kick-off.
- Maintain accurate, organized files on all projects estimated.
- Organize and prioritize multiple projects among multiple trades and adapt to frequent changes.
- Generate formal quotes, drawings and presentations for customer submission.
- Prepare and participate as required for releases of any new job or engineering change to the job release team.
- Must fully comprehend the customer’s needs and tooling requests.
- Display professionalism and represent Altron in a presentable manor at all times.
- Understand Altron’s tooling and manufacturing process.
- Participate in periodic design reviews and job close-out/lessons learned meetings.
- Lead and participate in activities that promote continuous improvements, Altron’s Total Quality Systems, QS and TE systems and that create a safe working environment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical preferred) with 2 to 5 + years of experience in estimating.

- Associates Degree in Applied Arts & Sciences (related to Engineering) with 5 + years of experience in estimating.
- 5 years of experience in Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with Solid Works, AutoCAD or other 3D software.
- Thorough understanding and ability to read and interpret machine designs, part drawings, part data, project specifications, and addendums.
- Working knowledge of automation and machine tooling and familiarity with standard concepts and practices in the industry.
- Technical and business acumen.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
- Critical thinking skills and strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Comfortable interacting with customers and outside vendors.
- Ability to communicate information to a variety of audiences.
- Strong technical writing and excellent oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with a willingness to work overtime as needed to meet customer deadlines.
- Ability to work with minimum direction.
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work in a collaborative team environment to achieve a common goal.
- Ability to travel 5 to 10% to customer facilities nationally and/or internationally.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, high volume environment.
