POSITION TITLE: Supplemental — Medical Assistant - Student Health Services
DEPARTMENT: Health Services
REPORTS TO: Director of Health Services
SALARY RANGE: $16.00 - $18.00/hour
ANTICIPATED START DATE: February 2021
SUMMARY
Assists the Director of Health Services, Medical Director, and physician in providing quality, cost-effective, non-judgmental and confidential health care and education to NMC students, staff and faculty. The ideal candidate will be detail oriented, accurate and dependable and be able to work independently as well as collaboratively with others. This individual must possess strong communication skills and have the ability to develop a rapport with people. This person will be flexible, able to multi-task and deal with interruptions, while maintaining a high work ethic, integrity, and confidentiality. The successful candidate will be able to reach out to people of diverse populations but still be able to connect one-on-one with students, with good listening skills and the ability to understand the needs of others.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES, AND LICENSES
Required:
• High School graduate
• Obtain Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification within 3 months of employment
• Experience with administering immunizations and phlebotomy
Preferred:
• 1-2 years of college or technical school
• Certification as a Medical Assistant or licensed as an L.P.N.
• Experience working in Healthcare
• Ability to successfully create and edit documents (memos, letters, tables, etc.) using word processing software (i.e. Microsoft Word®)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (OTHER DUTIES MAY BE ASSIGNED)
Deliver Care to Community College Students
• Greet students/patients and accompany to exam rooms. Obtain appropriate vital signs, chief complaint and document medical information in Electronic Medical Records (NueMD).
• Obtain specimens and in-house medications, with proper labeling and documentation, as ordered by physicians or nurse practitioner.
• Clean, restock, and set up exam rooms between patient visits.
• Build therapeutic relationships with students.
• Maintain proper medical record documentation in accordance with FERPA regulations.
• Administer immunizations, including Hepatitis B & A, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Influenza, Typhoid and annual Tuberculin testing, and document administered immunizations in NueMD and MICR.
• Prepare students for physician and nurse practitioner appointments, including Health Occupations and Maritime Academy physicals, which may include vision screening, vital signs, height and weight, color blindness screening, and immunization status.
• Match lab results with lab requisition form and place on Health Services Director's desk for review. Notify students of normal results after reviewed by Director.
• Perform CLIA-waived laboratory testing and documentation and perform controls as needed.
• Perform phlebotomy using sterile technique with proper labeling and storage for transport to Munson.
• Assist physician and nurse practitioner with procedures as needed.
• Clean, wrap, label and autoclave instruments for sterilization.
• Triage clinic phone calls and provide accurate information, schedule appointments or refer as necessary.
• Schedule outpatient testing or referrals to specialists as ordered by the physicians or nurse practitioner.
• Administer rapid COVID-19 tests.
Assist with Clinic Operations
• Clean and stock exam rooms.
• Assist with supply inventory, safety inspections, and data monitoring as directed by supervisor.
• Inventory and order phlebotomy supplies from Munson as needed.
• Knowledgeable and compliant with OSHA regulations.
• Assist with posting charges, payments, and end-of-day reports in Banner when the office manager is absent.
• Assist with posting charges, encounters, and payments in Nuesoft medical office management software when the office manager is absent.
• Assist with collecting and posting patient statistics into the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network website.
