Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Evaluation and assessment of patients followed by evidence based treatment of patient's health care needs, in a Veteran centric, team-based model of care deliver. Routine coordination and collaboration with specialty care, mental health, and other team members, is considered an essential component of this position in order to ensure optimum patient health and delivery of efficient care. The Primary Care Physician will provide primary care clinical coverage via face to face coverage or virtual medical care for the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). Duties of this position include; but are not limited to: Provides medical services to Veterans on an outpatient basis in the primary care setting. Provision of inpatient care or Urgent Care may be seldom required, and will be then specifically requested of the primary care provider by the supervisor. Provides primary care medicine to an assigned panel of adult Veterans. Veteran populations we serve are mostly male, with diseases consistent with those seen in the general population, namely diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, COPD, mental health disorders, amongst others. Comprehensive primary health care for women is also required. A primary focus of practice is on preventive medicine. Participates in the provision of Pain Management, Mental Health, and End of Life Care to Veterans in the primary care setting as required. Participates in the use of clinical practice guidelines, provision of standard of care to patients, and meets relevant performance measures as mandated by Veterans Health Administration (VHA). Reports quality of care issues promptly through established mechanisms Maintains timely and complete patient medical records that meet Compliance Program and Joint Commission requirements. Mentors Nurse Practitioners (NP) and/or Physician Assistants (PA) on a daily basis. Guides clinical management of complex patients consulted asked by mid-level providers, including patients with pain issues, and those requiring narcotic management. Participates in all Medical Staff functions as required by the VAMC Medical Staff Bylaws. Consults specialty physicians as appropriate and collaborates with specialty clinics for appropriate and streamlined patient care. Surrogate for view alert coverage of other physicians/providers for patient care issues. This function would ensure that all labs, consults, and other tests ordered by practitioners on leave are indeed reviewed for appropriate action or disposition. Must be Basic Life Support (BLS) certified. Supervision of PA and/or NP requires co-signature of controlled substance prescriptions. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, OR Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed, OR Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d). Staff Physician. None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine. Physical Requirements: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
