Ensure that high quality, standardized tool designs are completed and documented to ensure on time delivery of completed tools to the manufacturing floor.
Develops designs and design documents: Create and maintain 3d models, component and assembly prints, etc. for punch press and multi-slide (four slide, verti-slide, Bihler) tooling for the production of strip formed parts.
Performs engineering analysis: Analyzes engineering sketches, specifications and related data and drawings to determine tool design factors such as size, shape and arrangement of parts.
Support new business acquisition efforts: Estimates tool cost and strip dimensions to support quoting activities. Reviews product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.
Support current production jobs: Works closely with manufacturing personnel to ensure that lessons learned are incorporated into new designs and engineering changes are represented in tooling design records.
Resource Management: Works closely with the Toolroom Manager to coordinate purchasing of external components and services. Supports tooling design review and approval exercises for externally sourced tooling.
Participate in APQP process: Participate as a member of the APQP team to ensure tooling arrives correctly and on time in support of project objectives for cost, quality and delivery.
Develop and maintain standards: Develop and maintain both tooling and tooling design standards to facilitate internal and external sourcing and tooling consistency.
Tool design planning & execution:Lead the planning and execution of a tooling design project, including all scope changes along with defining project tasks. Plan, schedule and manage all elements using established Michigan Spring and Stamping systems.
Project Management: Defines objectives; develops plans that are comprehensive, realistic, and effective in meeting goals; develops contingency plans; provides clear direction; monitors progress; follows up to ensure objectives are met; keeps others informed.
Organization: Able to break down complex tasks into smaller manageable duties. Creates records and systems to manage tooling design and repair information. Design records, inventory records, best practice notes are easily accessible and up to date.
Machining Processes and Capabilities: Understands advantages and limitations of different machining techniques, including but not limited to additive manufacturing and EDM (wire & plunge). Can apply those advantages and limitations to create the most efficient and effective tool design for build, assembly, repair and operation.
Tooling Fabrication: Able to build and repair tools using appropriate equipment and techniques. Understands the impact of design on assembly, repair, durability and part quality. Understands different grades of tool steel and their appropriate use and application.
What will make you successful?
Associate in Applied Science Degree (Computer Aided Design, Engineering Technology, Machining Technology) preferred
5-10 years of diversified tool and die experience, preferably in the spring industry.
2 or more years designing tools in 3D CAD, preferably SolidWorks
