Summary
The Functional Safety Engineer Specialist serves as a recognized functional safety expert who provides leadership to the site surrounding SIS, SPI, SPA and machine safety. This role will interface with multiple teams to ensure functional safety standards are being met and are aligned to the needs of the entire plant. The Functional Safety Engineer Specialist also serves as a mentor and educator across the site for all aspects of functional safety.
Essential Functions
- Develops KPIs for Functional Safety – This includes SIS, SPI, SPA, Machine Safety, and Safety Instrumented Device Reliability. Drive improvement and provide direction on functional safety from a site level, this includes running and idled processes.
- SIS Analysis – Subject Matter Expert. Certify SIS analysis on a large chemical process per IEC 61508 and 61511. Maintain accurate documentation of the analysis. Interface with the Manufacturing Automation team SIS engineers to ensure site needs are being met. Own SIS analysis standards and procedure.
- Machine Safety – Subject Matter Expert. Facilitate the Machine Safety NWG, perform Machine Safety Risk Assessments, perform audits of machine safety configurations of machines on site and new machines arriving on site to ensure ISO 13849 requirements are satisfied. Own machine safety standards.
- Trip Check Coordination– Own the TCC process. Facilitate TCC NWG, act as gatekeeper during the TCC process. Ensure trip check processes meet required standards by working with Operations, Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Automation, and Instrument Shops.
- Instrumentation Interface – Create yearly instrument reliability report for safety systems. Work with the Reliability team to drive instrument failure rates down. Work with project engineering instrumentation team to determine if the correct instrumentation is being used in functional safety applications.
- Process Safety Interface – Work with the process safety team to ensure internal practices comply with IEC 61508 and 61511. This includes how the LOPA and PHA processes effect other departments on site that work with functional safety, namely Manufacturing Automation. Ensure the needs of both groups are met with the procedures on site.
- Educate the entire site on different aspects and importance of functional safety.
Additional Responsibilities
- Perform SIS analysis as needed to alleviate workload on Manufacturing Automation SIS engineers.
- Create and update machine safety models in SISTEMA.
- Assist in LOPA updates and creation as needed by the PSM team.
- Ensure the most recent versions of software and equipment databases are being used for both SIS and Machine Safety analysis.
