Summary
Within an engineering and construction work group the electrical and instrumentation designer role provides graphical drafting for diagrammatic and proportional (scaled) drawings, preliminary sketches, “red line” markups, and generalized instructions are used to complete finished drawings for electrical and instrumentation engineering disciplines. This role will also determine methods and techniques to be used to cope with conventional design problems plus provide consultation services in the preparation and layout of drawings.
Essential Functions
- Provides drafting/detailing on projects to which specific phases/scopes have been assigned.
- Works with project engineer or lead designer in developing an approach to the project assignment, develops details of the assignment and reviews the total approach.
- May serve as a lead designer on projects to help coordinate, perform and direct the design, CAD, and drawing activities on entire projects or phases of large projects.
- Provides communication regarding project aspects, plans, unusual problems, and progress.
- Coordinates the gathering of all necessary data and preparation of detailed drawings. Interacts with other work groups or engineering disciplines that may be affected by the effort. Incorporates all safety, environmental, quality, and operational aspects within the design. Recognizes state, federal and local regulations.
- Verifies thoroughness of completed work by checking dimensions, accuracy, materials to be used, quantities, etc.
- May initiate inquiries and purchase orders for material and equipment. Issues or coordinates issuance of bills of materials for equipment and construction.
- Recognizes drawing management practices, drawing maintenance where appropriate, and continues to develop proficiency of technique and knowledge of a specific discipline.
- Assists in the training of other designers or drafters.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends in design, company practices, procedures and principles as they affect his area of specialization. Makes recommendations relative to these methods and procedures.
Additional Duties
- Maintains engineering records related to the CAD/drawing environment, e.g. drawing indexes, cell libraries, drawing borders, line numbers, etc.
- Utilizes various management systems to accomplish job activities, e.g. drawing management system, Falcon, Engineering Standards documents, Area Classification standards, Management of Change (MOC), record retention policies, etc.
