Job Brief
Looking for an Estimator to join our team in either Iron Mountain, MI or Oxford, MI.
Position Purpose: Independently develop cost estimates and resource requirements with a primary focus on utility substation capital and maintenance construction opportunities (training for these functions will be provided).
Essential Responsibilities
Assist with the request for proposal preparation and evaluations, project specifications, and pricing schedules
Prepare pre-approval project estimates based on limited information and general scopes of work, often lacking specific detailed RFP information
Assist project team in scoping of projects for engineering, procurement, construction, and contractual requirements
Develop detailed post-approval project estimates based on company best practices and site-specific facility drawings
Assist with the development of pricing schedules and weighting criteria for proposal evaluations
Provide expert judgment of costs to support competitive bid and negotiated contracts
Assist with the development of standardized historical cost databases and application tools to aid future estimates
Provide oversight, coordination, management support and technical expertise for all aspects of electrical substation construction projects for utility and renewables clients
Review plans, specifications, and drawings to determine the cost of the project
Analyze time, equipment, tooling, material, and manpower requirements for each project
Perform material takeoffs and develop a written estimate of cost to perform the work according to the specifications
Ownership of the Request for Proposals to provide logical, accurate proposals in response to client needs
Interface with customers, vendors, and subcontractors to determine the cost of the project
Gather information to determine subcontractor and vendor suitability and aggressively gain the best pricing
Exercise significant independent discretion in developing project estimates and applying project specific risk assessments that translate into cost
Visit customer field locations as required to ascertain project conditions
Attend pre and post bid meetings as required and be able to effectively present information to clients to sell our company's construction services
Select pool of potential subcontractors and equipment vendors to solicit their proposals
Analyze special safety and code requirements on all projects
Work as part of an integrated Operations and Estimating team in acquiring projects
Properly turns over bid documents to Operations in a timely manner

Knowledge of Microsoft Office and proficient in the use of Excel
Knowledge of Microsoft Access software preferred.
Knowledge of various estimating software programs preferred
Qualifications
3-5 years' experience in utility substation electrical construction or industrial electrical construction required or have an engineering or associates degree in the electrical field (must have an electrical background). Electrical Estimating, Engineering, Project Management, or Electrical Wireman experience (preferred).
Previous utility substation or industrial estimating experience is not a requirement if prior electrical experience and computer skills prove to be adequate.
Work Environment
Must be able to remain in a stationary position over 50% of the time
The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc
Continuously operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, scanner, and computer printer
The person in this position frequently communicates with employees and coworkers and must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations
Occasionally lifting 20 pounds
Must be willing to travel for short durations to customer pre-bid meetings or construction sites
