Performs the full range of nursing assignments in a behavioral care setting including but not limited to:
- Assist in overseeing and directing subordinate personnel in assigned unit to ensure effective nursing care by promoting safety, good communication and appropriate delegation. Assist in maintaining continuity of care for patients within assigned unit and serves as a resource person to nursing personnel.
- Work closely with the Nurse Manager and Nursing Supervisor, as appropriate. Evaluates patient care needs in assigned unit, determines work priorities and makes daily work assignments. Assists in evaluating and obtaining the appropriate staffing necessary to meet the needs of patients. (e.g. safety, acuity, seclusion/restraints, 1:1, etc.)
- Assist in overseeing the planning of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation and enforces nursing standards to ensure safe, therapeutically effective nursing care.
- Monitor the effectiveness of activities by nursing staff through direct observation on a daily basis and initiates necessary corrective actions.
- Assist in revising or developing, implementing, and administering standards of care, policy, and procedures.
- Orient and train employees within assigned unit. Assists in evaluating the work of subordinates and recommends/implements disciplinary actions when necessary.
- Using evidence – based practice/guidelines, assist with the development, evaluation and presentation of in-service, educational programs, and nursing care conferences, within assigned unit.
- Develop and maintain cooperative working relationships with variety of facility departments necessary to schedule appointments, order supplies, gather and exchange information, resolve operational problems and improve services provided.
- Direct and coordinate on shift emergency situations (e.g. Code Blue, Code 22, safety/security, fire, internal/external disaster, severe weather, bomb threat, etc.).
- Participate in nursing personnel reviews and evaluations.
- Responsible for working knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g. Joint Commission, CMS Hospital CoPs, Mental Health Codes, etc.) and for enforcement of such regulations.
- Implement specific responsibilities as delegated by Nurse Manager or Nursing Supervisor. May assume responsibility for some of the nursing management functions as assigned in their absence.
