Job Summary
Directs the day to day project activity through the interaction with technical personnel while gathering, analyzing and interpreting scientific data. Analyzes data as well as prepare samples for analysis, record data, and perform routine tests and studies. Responsible for training other individuals in analytical Chemistry techniques within the lab and for the method validation of new analytical methods. Prepares reagents and standards for chemical analyses and conducts routine/non-routine environmental testing. This may include various wet chemistry techniques such as extractions, dilutions, hot plate and microwave digestions, pipetting, along with the preparation and cleaning of glassware and work areas. Problem solving and technical support for the optimum operation and maintenance of company assets working both internally and with external companies, such as instrument manufacturers. Performs a variety of technical work requiring application of scientific principles, techniques, and procedures. Uses technical judgment on details of work and selection of alternatives.
Key Accountabilities
- Establishes technical limits, guidelines and recommendations at the organizational level.
- Maintains accurate and complete lab data notebook, communicates precise and accurate results of analyses in accordance with prescribed lab procedures and systems.
- Ability to apply statistical analysis to verify sample integrity within the laboratory quality program
- Ability to write technical reports for distribution to customers.
- Leads and assists in the development and execution of small capital projects.
- Recommends and implements solutions to complex problems involving the science, design, operation, and maintenance of industrial laboratory instruments.
- May mentor, provide guidance and direction or act in a 'subject matter expert' capacity for less experienced staff; may provide input in performance evaluations, but does not supervise.
- Recommends and implements continuous improvement initiatives to optimize systems, processes, and work flow.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree and 7 years of experience in a data analysis and decision making role.
Other Qualifications
Preferred:
- Master's Degree in Metallurgy or job relevant discipline
- Expert level principal materials knowledge of natural gas handling materials
- Knowledge of chemical, physical and mechanical properties as well as evaluation methods (mechanical testing, metallography, SEM, non-destructive inspection, chromatography, spectroscopy) is preferred
- Familiarity with Reference Standards such as ASTM, ASME, ANSI, API, MSS
- Materials Quality & Failure Inspection/Analysis or Steel and Plastic Pipe & Components
- Destructive & Non-Destructive Examination (RT, UT, MP and LP)
- Certified Welding Inspector
- Certified Radiographic Interpreter or Equivalent
- Certified Coatings Inspector
- Natural Gas Pipeline Construction
