LOCATION
The reporting location for the Principal Engineer Lead - Transmission Integrity Management Program (TIMP) Lead is negotiable. Ability to travel and support the Transmission Integrity Management Team across the state of Michigan is required.
DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
The Transmission Integrity Management Program Team is responsible for the analysis, planning, and execution of system integrity activities for the gas transmission system in accordance with Title 49 CFR Part 192. Consumers Energy operates approximately 2500 miles of transmission pipeline within the state of Michigan. The activities the team performs includes transmission integrity management program, integrity risk assessment, inline Inspection and remediation planning and activities, direct assessment, and corrosion control.
JOB DESCRIPTION/RESPONSIBLITIES
This position leads a team of engineers and technical analysts that are responsible for analysis, planning, and execution of system integrity activities for the gas transmission system in accordance with Title 49 CFR Part 192. This includes transmission integrity management program, integrity risk assessment, inline Inspection and remediation planning and activities, direct assessment, and corrosion control. This position is responsible for leadership and management of work activities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations for the safety operations of the natural gas transmission system. The TIMP lead must successfully interface with leadership from Project Management, Gas Operations, Gas Control, Financial Services, Regulatory Assurance, Gas Engineering, Environmental Services, Land and Right of Way and Supply Chain.
The duties and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
- Financial Planning
- Provide oversight of Transmission integrity Management Capital and Maintenance expense programs
- Develop and Implement process improvements for cost efficiencies
- Risk Assessment
- Lead efforts of assessment and prioritization of inspection cycle plans and remediation requirements
- Provide management and oversight of implementation of new regulations or integrity management requirements
- Project Management
- Manage internal linkages with gas engineering, gas control, real estate, environmental, compliance, planning, scheduling, supply chain and field operations to ensure the success of transmission integrity program and work activities
- Review and approve service contracts related to Inline inspection/remediation contractors and direct assessment projects
- Oversee and approve bidding and awarding vendor contracts for Inline inspection tool vendors, assessment engineering vendors, pipeline remediation construction vendors, third party inspection vendors, temporary compression vendors and engineering firms.
- Align with gas control on outage schedule to complete inspection and remediation work, while ensuring gas deliverability requirements for the winter
- Provide oversight on outages and workplans for Direct Assessment work
- Coaching and Counseling
- Manage performance and development of direct and indirect reports
- Drive team to achieve business plan results and develop countermeasures to ensure success
- Standards/Best Practice Review
- Evaluates design tools, equipment, procedure changes, and organizational linkages
- Best practice review and development
- Identification of any potential gaps or improvement opportunity to adherence to the integrity management program regulations
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements in Title 49 CFR Part 192
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited university
- Minimum of 12 years of applied exempt engineering working experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan, preferred
- Knowledge of federal and state gas code including: Obligations required under 49 CFR 192, Michigan Gas Safety Standards and Company Gas Manuals and standards.
- Integrity and risk assessment knowledge of inline and direct assessment planning and regulations
- Engineering principles of gas system networks and integrity management
- Financial and business acumen including managing financial resources to maximize systemintegrity Improvement across capital and O&M programs while minimizing the risk exposure to the company.
- General knowledge of NACE corrosion principles and applications
- Process oriented to drive business results and waste elimination
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

HOURS & TRAVEL
This position requires the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week (45-50 typical) with 90% of time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location. Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines. Individual may have to work outside of assigned headquarters on projects or to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays. Individuals must have a valid driver's license.

This role will be work-from-home until our leadership team has determined it's safe to resume work in the office. At that time, this position may require 1-2 days/week travel to their selected office location. Remote work will be available for the rest of the time. Ideally the selected candidate would reside in the state of Michigan in order to commute on a regular basis to their selected office location.
