Summary:
The Pharmacy Specialist organizes, directs and ensures the day-to-day effective operations of the clinical Pharmacy staff. This individual is responsible for directing the daily workflow by assigning work, supervising and organizing the daily work schedule and collaborates with clinical staff to achieve maximum utilization of services. Handling of day to day operational problems is expected. There is 24-hour accountability for all clinical personnel and system functions related to clinical services. The Specialist will participate in and monitor the usage of medications within the organization and is responsible for bringing new or changed therapies to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee. The Specialist has a large role as the educator to the staff. The Specialist is also responsible for investigational drug protocol use in the institution from the Pharmacy perspective. He/she upholds the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant, and commit to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities:
Contributes to organization success targets for net operating margin.
Plans or delegates the preparation of schedules, and organizes the staff ensuring proper distribution and delegation of assignments and efficient utilization of personnel, space and facilities.
Accountability for the proper use of medications in a cost conscious fashion.

Creates and maintains a culture of service excellence and accountability in the Pharmacy and serves as a role model to others.
Identifies and effectively responds to issues relating to client (Nursing, Physician, Patient) satisfaction.
Demonstrated ability to manage and develop clinical staff in their consulting and dosing roles. Familiarity with all clinical computer systems and applications. Demonstrated ability to meet Covenant's Leadership Expectations among which are Strategic leadership, Character, Interpersonal skills, Job Performance and results. Ability to function as a clinical Pharmacist safely and effectively.
Conducts and/or works in conjunction with the director on employee management issues including hiring, corrective action and evaluation of employees.
Coaches, mentors, encourages, and motivates employees . Promotes team work and acts as a resource for employees. Instructs staff and trains new employees where appropriate.
Creates and monitors daily staff assignments and ensures assignment completion. Ensures appropriate scheduling of employees and adjusts staffing to work volume and attendance. Monitors workflow patterns and suggests changes to improve service.
Recommends and develops new procedures to improve services.
Assists in establishing and documenting competencies.
Serves as lead for investigational medication protocols and documentation in the Pharmacy.
Acts as a clinical pharmacist in provision of services including antibiotics, TPNs, and anticoagulation.
Monitors improvement reports and recommends actions to ensure continuous quality improvement.
Establish and coordinate clinical Pharmokinetic dosing programs for the pharmacy staff.
Develops agenda for the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee and serves as an active member.
Serves as a contact point for sales representatives seeking to add new products to the formulary.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Current Michigan licensure to practice as a Pharmacist
Pharm D preferred. At least 1 yr. Residency preferred.
Maintains professional development through seminars, workshops, in-service activities and current professional literature.
Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in a hospital setting preferred previous clinical pharmacy experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Computer competency, including EPIC and Outlook.
Superior knowledge of medication therapeutics
Clinical expertise in Pharmacy systems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must be able to work well with the internal staff and public and able to be tactful in often hectic and stressful situations
Sound judgment in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.
Ability to develop and lead teams.
Able to flex work schedule in order to meet department and staffing needs
Clinical decision-making ability.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to maintain punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, near vision, midrange vision, visual accommodation, color vision and field of vision.
Occasional lifting up to 10 lbs.
Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, reaching, handling, feeling, far vision and depth perception.
