General Summary
The Director of Fleet Operations is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and oversight for the execution of Fleet Operations ranging from all activities related to Operations including gas, electric and generation needs on daily weekly, monthly basis up to the execution of strategic plan. The total portfolio includes over eight thousand (8,000) pieces of fleet equipment ranging from bucket trucks and derricks to trailers and excavators. The Director of Fleet Operations manages an annual delivery of vehicles from a budget ranging from $50 - 99M per year. This includes vehicle/equipment maintenance, new vehicle/equipment commissioning, and safety checks as it relates to the needs of Electric, Gas and Generation Operations. The Director of Fleet Operations has the experience and knowledge of all aspects of executing Operational leadership and will be responsible for executing the strategic plan and utilizing the CE Way to build efficiency and eliminate waste within processes . The Director of Fleet Operations is directly responsible for the leadership, management, and administration of the Fleet professionals responsible for the operational execution.
Job Description/Responsibilities
- Oversight and accountability for Operational excellence, project execution, budgets, forecasts, and actual spending while driving enhancement of Field Operation problem solving and process improvement at all levels of the organization using project controls, metrics, and reporting.
- Provide direct supervision, support, training, and mentoring to the Fleet leadership teams, assess competencies and knowledge of Fleet professionals and provide leadership and coaching for growth and development.
- Manage multiple initiatives and activities and liaison to other corporate and operations departments
- Participate in the negotiations and resolution of major Operations claims and issue with vendors and service providers.
- Ensure alignment with the Fleet, Facilities, and Operation Support for department goals and CE Way/Lean operations. Assure the Field Operations team is working effectively across a matrix organization to direct the delivery of projects within schedule, budget, quality and working agreements.
- Support the identification and implementation of various labor agreements on daily work of Union and Non-Union workforce dynamics.
- Lead the team throughout emergency events to provide proper fleet support including during storm restoration, gas emergencies and mutual assistance assignments
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Exposure and experience with Operations, IT development, Lean/6Sigma, Energy Supply, and construction management, preferred.

The location for this position can be remote, or a centrally located service center in the State of Michigan.
Requirements/Qualifications
- 10+ years' experience. Preferred within the Utility, Construction or related industry providing consistent and efficient customer solutions and/or product management.
- Requires a bachelor's degree preferably in an Engineering or Business field; Master's degree preferred or equivalent experience. Applicable exempt work experience is not required.
- Less than a bachelor's degree may be acceptable if accompanied by other technical training / relevant certifications and extensive experience (internal/external) in positions that demonstrate required abilities and performance.
- Project Management training, preferred
Essential Functions
Support and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation fleet and ancillary support processes for all utility operations. Individual possesses the skills to lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment. Individuals should exemplify safe work practices and follow the Company's compliance standards. Lead Fleet Operations activities to include plans and metrics required to validate inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs are completed right the first time. It is imperative that the all applicable governmental laws and Company standards and procedures are adhered to and within the authorized budget and headcount. Utilize effective oral and written communication skills to provide expertise to coworkers, clients, customers, government entities and the public. Resolve all customer complaints in a timely manner. Develop strong relationships with local and statewide operations to gain feedback and monitor performance and other duties.
