Position Summary
The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a position in Nutrition and Toxicology as an Academic Specialist in Nutrition. Applicants must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, and an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Animal Science, Nutrition, Comparative Physiology or a similar field. Board certification or eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition is desirable. Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills are required. The VDL, one of the country''s premier veterinary diagnostic laboratories, provides full-service laboratory support to the MSU Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) as well as to international and national clients and serves companion animals and horses as well as livestock, laboratory, zoo, and wildlife species. The Nutrition and Toxicology section offers comprehensive service including tissue and blood serum trace nutrient mineral, vitamin and fatty acid profiles. The section has state-of-the-art equipment including ICP-MS, GC-FID, GC-MS, GC-MS/MS, LC-MS/MS, and UPLC-PDA.
The successful applicant must have a strong commitment to providing outstanding diagnostic service for colleagues within the MSU Veterinary Medical Center, as well as for private veterinary practitioners and clients who submit diagnostic material through the VDL. Position responsibilities will include review and interpretation of animal and feed samples to identify nutritional imbalances or nutrition-related issues. There are opportunities to participate in teaching in the professional DVM and Veterinary Technology curriculum, as well as to participate in advising, mentoring, and instruction of graduate students and residents. The successful candidate will have responsibility for a portion of the VDL service/outreach activities, including marketing. Scholarly activity is expected including presentation at local, regional and national meetings, collaborative research, publication and active participation in laboratory test development and innovation.

Minimum Requirements
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine; advanced (MS or PhD) degree in Animal Science, Nutrition, Comparative Physiology or other related fields; effective communication skills; ability to relate complex concepts to diverse audiences; ability to read, write, and understand English; demonstrated cultural competency, and commitment to a philosophy of providing excellent service in support of the VDL’s vision to be a trusted leader in diverse, innovative laboratory solutions and education for animal health partners around the globe. Final job offer contingent upon complete background check and receipt of official transcripts.
Desired Qualifications
Board certification or board-eligibility by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition or 3-5 years of experience interpreting nutrition results from animal samples. Ability to analyze large datasets. Knowledge of statistics and probability important to bioinformatics research.
