Purpose: The position is a Nurse Consultant for the Michigan Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP). This nurse consultant will provide nursing consultation and technical assistance to health care providers across the public and private sector to assist those providers in managing cases of childhood lead poisoning. The nurse consultant will assist with ongoing improvement of health care programs, practices and standards related to childhood lead poisoning and prevention and help develop and implement the state's response to Action Level Exceedances (ALEs) specific to lead in communities across Michigan. This person will assist with educational events, testing events and provider education in ALE communities. This position will be housed in the MDHHS Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health in Lansing.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review DEH ALE reports and initiate contact with local health departments and/or other health care professionals as needed.
- Provide nursing support to ALE community blood lead testing events as needed.
- Review CLPPP surveillance reports and develop targeted outreach plan to high-risk communities based on EBL rates.
- Maintain records and nursing notes, prepare reports and correspondence to support Nurse Case Management program and CLPPP technical assistance to local health department nursing staff.
- Provide information and guidance in the development of policies and standards of nursing practice for childhood lead services; adapt nursing procedures and practices to meet the changing needs of nursing and health care programs.
- Participate in the dissemination of MDHHS/CLPPP lead screening/testing recommendations to medical providers and other MDHHS program staff (Medicaid, MIHP, WIC) with a primary focus on providers in ALE communities.
- Conduct other duties as required.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Education: Master's degree in nursing, public health, or another health field preferred. Will consider candidates with a bachelor's degree in nursing, public health or another health field and three years of post-bachelor's registered nurse experience in a clinical or public health setting.
Experience: 2-5 years of clinical nursing experience. Highly desirable: Educational background in or experience in public health nursing and/or environmental health programming.
Important Skills and Knowledge:
- Knowledge of general nursing principles, practices and standards.
- Knowledge of medical services, social services, dietary services, rehabilitation services, and environmental services pertaining to lead poisoning.
- Knowledge of the activities of educational and social agencies as related to local health care.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.

- Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Knowledge of public health system in Michigan.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Physical effort typical of working in a standard office environment. In-state travel to ALE communities and/or medical provider practices required. Requires valid vehicle operator's license and occasional travel within the State, including overnights. There may be times when work outside of regular hours is necessary for the completion of a project. Materials and supplies can be bulky and may weigh up to 40 lbs.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.
IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: Position will support the Division of Environmental Health's response to Action Level Exceedance (ALE) communities. It will also assist in CLPPP's capacity to assist in nursing case management for children with elevated blood lead levels throughout the state.
