Job Description Summary | Operation, development, and maintenance of the MTU cloud chamber facility. | Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned) | • Monitor laboratory and chamber technical status, make recommendations for modifications and repairs. • Assist in identification of supplies and equipment within budget constraints, and with acquisition and installation of new components or instruments. • Take active role in characterization and calibration of the cloud chamber and associated instrumentation. • Assist project investigators in the setup and operation of the facility for research measurements. • Work non-standard hours as required for intensive research programs or outreach activities. • Contribute to weekly chamber research meetings. • Participate in orientation of new students and visiting researchers, including safety training. • Train graduate students in the operation of equipment emphasizing potential problems and solutions. • Attend professional meetings as required. • Assist with the analysis of research results, and preparation of summaries needed for publications or proposals for future projects involving the chamber. • Other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Supervision of student research assistants may be required.
| Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements) | Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field. | Required Experience (minimum requirements) | Experience with running, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems. Broad-based experience with computers, including data acquisition and CAD software. Electronics background/experience. | Desirable Education and/or Experience | Two years experience in working in a laboratory environment. Experience with refrigeration or thermal-control systems. Experience with aerosol, cloud-microphysical and turbulence instrumentation. Team leadership and/or project management experience. Crane operation experience. | Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements) | Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and record-keeping skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. | Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills | Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
