Position: The School of Art & Design at Northern Michigan University invites applications for an Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Human-Centered Design concentration. This is a campus-based, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August, 2020.
Duties and Responsibilities: Candidate will teach three courses per semester that would include Human-Centered/Industrial Design studio art courses and art foundations courses when required. Candidates would be required to participate in university, college and school committee work, and maintain professional involvement in the field of Human-Centered Design.
Minimum Qualifications: MFA or MID in Human-Centered Design, Product Design, Industrial Design, or related field. Previous university/college teaching experience, which could include graduate teaching assistantships. Experience assessing student learning outcomes.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Ability to instruct students throughout all stages of design skill and process (sketching, model making, structure, assembly, production methods, problem solving, research, theory, and ethics). Proficiency with rapid prototyping/manufacturing technology and industrial production practices including assisting students with Computer Aided Design, Laser Cutters, 3D Printers and Computer Numerically Controlled machining projects. Software expertise with 2D and 3D Modeling/Rendering/CAM, and Adobe Software. Evidence of model making and prototype construction using an assortment of materials including wood, metal, and plastics and both analogue and digital methodology is also required.
Ability to teach at undergraduate level. Ability to work with others. Effective oral and written communication.
Additional Desirable Qualifications: Experience with sustainable design practices preferred. Experience with Rhinoceros Software and Apple platform preferred. Active involvement in design methodology with an innovative design process that promotes research and experimentation through production techniques, form and interaction.
