Summary
Under general supervision, the Schedule Writer prepares and writes schedules for current fixed route transportation services that will maintain maximum efficiency at the least expense within the Authority’s policies. Develops schedules for new services as they are offered and analyzes existing service. Works to coordinate fixed route and connector services as necessary to meet customer needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Using scheduling software, prepares route modifications and schedules for assigned transportation services, taking into account the type of service necessary, number of buses required, number of trips, miles, tie-ins with other runs, union contract restrictions, etc., to maximize efficiency and service while minimizing non-revenue producing expenses.
- Prepares trip and route design detail for use in public timetables.
- Prepares documents used in operator daily work assignments, calculation of operator payrolls, dispatching, on-time performance checks and statistical reports.
- Develops operations performance reports such as statistics relating to productivity of services and ridership trends.
- Prepares service notices for distribution to passengers and internal staff.
- Performs roadwork which consists of driving proposed routes, measuring distances and times, checking turnarounds, and arranging for lay-over and restroom facilities.
- Works in conjunction with Connector Service Analyst to coordinate fixed route and connector services to meet customer needs.
- Analyzes operations reports and investigates variances from projected performance.
- Attends driver forum meetings to discuss scheduling problems with operators.
- Responds to telephone inquiries concerning transportation services.
- Executes and analyzes AVL reports to analyze running time.
- Meets with area leaders to enhance understanding of transit and potential changes.
- Conducts public meetings to gather and disseminate information.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science.
- Four or more years experience in developing transportation schedules.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for minimum requirements.
- Knowledge of Windows-based word processing and spreadsheet computer application.
- Ability to work independently on tasks requiring a high level of detail.
- Strong proofreading skills.
- Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- A test may be required for this position.
