GENERAL SUMMARY
METS – Michigan Educational Transportation Services is looking to fill a position to support the school bus mechanic in the bus garage and the grounds staff at Portland Public Schools. The person filling this position must be capable of substituting for both the mechanic and grounds lead, in their absence. The METS Mechanic & Grounds Support person must also possess or obtain a CDL with P & S endorsements and certification to drive a school bus as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – Mechanic Support
• Assist in the care and maintenance of all district vehicles to include school buses, trucks, cars and vans.
• Assist the grounds department in maintaining any motorized equipment including tractors and lawn equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – Grounds Support
• Assist in maintaining the school grounds. Grounds work will consist of mowing, weed trimming, marking of athletic fields, painting buildings, plowing snow, repairing and maintaining fences, signs and other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES – School Bus Driver (As Needed)
• Provide substitute school bus driving services for department needs that may not be met by the substitute bus driver pool, such as unfilled routes, trips or roadside response requiring a spare bus.
• Safe operation of a school bus or other transportation equipment in accordance with all applicable company policies, state and federal laws.
• Conduct all pre-trip inspections as required.
• Navigate routes within the district boundaries as well as successful navigation to trip locations outside of the assigned district.
• Manage student behavior on the bus to maintain a safe environment in which students are able to arrive at school ready to learn.
• Successfully interact with parents, students, community members and other staff in a courteous and professional manner to maintain a positive relationship between the transportation office and its constituents.
SKILL/KNOWLEDGEMENT REQUIREMENTS
• A strong mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of gasoline & diesel powered engines both large and small.
• Working knowledge of general maintenance and housekeeping; building repair, ventilating, heating, lighting, mowing & turf maintenance, hardware, water and sewage.
• Prior experience in maintenance or related field.
• Demonstrated knowledge of proper use of cleaning materials, cleaning implements and associated equipment such as power tools & machinery.
• Physical ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs. or more.
• Ability to climb stairs & ladders, successfully navigate over obstacles, climb through openings and crawl in confined areas.
• Ability to work well with staff, students, and parents.
• Ability to work independently.
• Possess and maintain an excellent attendance record.
• Experience with inventory control.
• Basic computer knowledge.
• Maintain respect at all time for confidential information.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
• Graduation from high school or trade school or its equivalent; or any combination of experience and training which will provide the desired knowledge, abilities and skills.
