Department Summary
Consumers Energy Gas Control is part of the Gas Management Services (GMS) department. GMS ensures that natural gas delivered to Consumers Energy customers is uninterrupted and at the lowest possible cost. Gas Control's primary function is to ensure the safe and effective supply and delivery of natural gas at approximately 30 system interconnections, 150 high pressure transmission regulation stations and 250 high to low pressure distribution regulator stations. Gas Control teams with Consumers Energy field stakeholders from Compression, Storage, Metering and Regulation (M&R) and Pipeline groups to accomplish this role.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The Gas Controller will be responsible for the following:
•Monitor, control and operate the gas transmission and distribution system in a manner that meets operational needs while following operational policies and procedures.
•Perform duties as described per 49CFR192.631 and the Consumers Energy Gas Control Room Management (CRM) plan and may perform such duties while under direction of a more senior Gas Controller.
•Continuously monitors and controls the operation of Gas Transmission, Gas Storage and Gas Distribution Facilities to ensure the overall safety and integrity of the Gas System.
This position is located in Jackson, Michigan at the Parnall Complex.
Due to the training involved with becoming fully functional in the role of Gas Controller, the successful candidate will be ineligible to apply for another internal job posting for the first 48 months of their employment.
Requirements/Qualifications
•High School Diploma or GED Degree
•1+ years of experience with natural gas or high pressure fluids applications
•Must be able to obtain the Gas Controller qualification within 6-12 months
•Prior to the start date, Consumers Energy requires that the successful candidate live no more than 1 hours from his/her Jackson work location. (In accordance with U.S. Department of Transportation's pipeline and hazardous materials safety administration (PHMSA) control room management fatigue mitigation requirements.)
•Be able to pass a Background Check / Personal Risk Assessment (PRA) screening.

The following skills or experience will set you apart from others:
•Experience in gas field or pipeline operations.
•Experience monitoring and operating high pressure fluid systems using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.
•Understanding of compressible fluid regulation, flow dynamics and physical characteristics of compressible fluids under varying temperatures and pressures.
•Completed some college level technical courses and / or have an Associate's Degree in a technical field.
•Strong oral and written communication skills.
•Proficiency with Microsoft databases and spreadsheets.
•Be willing to work alternating 8, 10 or 12 hour day/evening shifts.

•Gas Controllers monitor, control and operate the gas transmission and distribution system by following the CRM/regulatory policies and procedures. Conduct system analyses and support services with accuracy. Use computer assisted applications software and equipment to prepare business analysis support documents. Understand and follow Company established standard procedures in order to complete work assignments. Become familiar with business and department plans and related material for job assignments. Gas Controller's utilize highly technical information and discern system operations and risks in a highly detailed environment under stressful situations. Utilize effective communications skills to answer inquiries and provide leadership to coworkers. Attend internal meetings. Provide business analyses and support services in a legal and ethical manner.
•Hours and Travel:
•These positions require that the individual work a minimum of 40 hours per week with up to 100% of time spent in the office or at the Gas Controller's Stations. Shift work can occur on weekends and during holiday periods. Operations and training require minimal travel to alternative job sites from the central office.

•These positions require employee background checks in order to have unescorted access to any gas control room boundaries that are regulated and enforced by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Pipeline Security Guidelines. Employee is subject to random drug testing in accordance with Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration (PHMSA) requirements.
