Department Summary
Located within Generation Engineering, Project Engineering supports modifications to existing facilities and new construction projects for the electric generating (renewables, hydroelectric, coal, and gas generation) and gas compression asset fleets. The Mechanical Project Engineer works in a team setting in the role of lead and/or support engineer for engineering projects within Consumers Energy. Project Engineering works closely with project managers, engineers of other disciplines, system engineers, environmental engineers, plant operations and maintenance personnel, outage managers, construction managers, Architectural & Engineering firms, contracted labor, and vendor representatives to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and on budget.

Job Description/Responsibilities
The Mechanical Project Engineer position is based out of the D.E. Karn Generating Complex in Essexville, MI.
The primary role of the Mechanical Project Engineer will be to support projects at electric generating facilities, although some support to gas compression and storage assets is likely as well. The Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for providing support to project managers related to the planning and execution of all mechanical engineering aspects of capital and maintenance projects. The Mechanical Project Engineer is responsible for ensuring adherence to design standards and that detailed designs meet all applicable compliance and regulatory requirements. The Mechanical Project Engineer ensures that project work is properly coordinated between internal and external engineers of record, vendors, fabricators and contractors to meet project requirements.
The Mechanical Project Engineer will perform moderately complex assignments requiring application of standard techniques, theory, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of related engineering tasks. The candidate must independently evaluate, select, and apply engineering theory, techniques, procedures and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications. The Mechanical Project Engineer will be required to work efficiently and effectively on small and large project teams supporting several project managers.
Key Responsibilities include:
•Provide Mechanical Engineering support for project initiation activities including feasibility studies, conceptual engineering design, and cost estimating
•Develop Mechanical Engineering technical specifications and bid documents for detailed engineering, engineered equipment, materials, and construction contracts
•Lead the technical bid evaluation for detailed engineering, equipment, materials, and construction contracts
•Oversee the development of detailed design documents by the Engineer of Record
•Develop and/or review engineering drawings and calculations that detail plans and specifications for construction projects
•Develop project Design Plans for all assigned projects
•Communicate effectively with a vast group of stakeholders to ensure all mechanical technical aspects of the project are completed per the safety, scope, schedule, and budgetary objectives
•Perform shop inspection visits to supplier facilities to ensure quality and adherence to specifications
•Perform field engineering and support the resolution of construction issues
•Support testing and commissioning of new equipment and facilities
•Identify, analyze, and recommend corrective actions to technical issues identified in the field during project execution and/or initial operation
•Assist project management and project controls with the development of project schedules and budgets.
•Attend and/or lead project coordination meetings
•Participate in the closeout of projects including turnover of project files and record documents at project closure; capture lessons learned
