The Powertrain Dynamics CAE Engineer integrates powertrain, vehicle mechanical system models and controls algorithms to a level of detail that is sufficient to evaluate transient dynamic response, efficiency, performance, and vehicle drivability. An engineer in this position will be responsible for working with engine, transmission, driveline and suspension design release engineers to provide dynamic loads, evaluate design functions and provide design change recommendations to meet performance targets. The knowledge of powertrain system functions, dynamical systems modeling, and overall powertrain/vehicle system integration are critical skill sets for this position.
Job responsibilities include but not limited to:
•Primarily responsible for virtual (CAE) validation and development of automotive powertrain, driveline, vehicle suspension systems to meet functional, durability, and NVH requirements
•Develops multi-body dynamics models for powertrain, driveline and vehicle suspension mechanical sub-systems; these sub-system models are then integrated with appropriate control algorithms into an overall powertrain and vehicle system model
•Multi-body system models are created by commercial CAE tools such as ADAMS, SIMDRIVE, MATLAB, or in-house vehicle modeling software environments
•Provide simulation results for drivability, transient dynamic response, efficiency, and vehicle performance metrics at various design stages and create design concepts to meet requirements
•Virtual analysis includes vehicle transient response during — aggressive launch, gear-shifts, rough road conditions, stick-slip (powerhop), and step mu (ice to asphalt) maneuvers
•Develop improvements to advanced simulation and validation techniques
•Create and maintain all documentation associated with models, software, hardware design level and configuration data
•Work collaboratively with other virtual analysis engineers, powertrain and chassis design teams, test engineers, and suppliers to meet product targets and timing
Basic Qualifications:
•Master degree in Mechanical engineering or related engineering field from an ABET accredited university
•Minimum 3 years of engineering experience
•Minimum 2 years of industry working experience in developing powertrain or vehicle system multi-body dynamic models using ADAMS, Simdrive, AVL-Excite, or equivalent
•Strong background in powertrain systems, specifically cranktrain, valvetrain, timing drive, FEAD, transmission, and driveline systems
•Knowledgeable on durability and NVH requirements of powertrain components
•Experience with higher level programing languages such as Python, C/C++/C#/Java
•Very Good oral and written communication skills
•Problem solving proficiency and self-directed
Preferred Qualifications:
•PhD Mechanical Engineering
•Demonstrated experience in leading design and solving problems in powertrain dynamic systems
