Position Summary: The Principal Cost Engineer, Software & Licensing will report into the HARMAN Best Cost Analytics organization and will be responsible for the development of cost models and cost-focused sourcing strategies covering HARMAN's software licensing and development services requirements across the full product portfolio, including Automotive and Consumer products. The developed models and strategies will establish Design-to-Cost controls that will be utilized by HARMAN team's, including Engineering and Procurement, to optimize software-related product costs.
Job Responsibilities:
•Development and delivery of cost models using internal and external data sources in support of HARMAN's products
•Establish the vision, framework and methods needed to enable highly accurate cost modeling covering all of the constituent cost components for software licensing and services including license fees, royalties, non-recurring developments costs and annual support & maintenance
•Define the HARMAN "best practice" cost references for software & licensing used in HARMAN's products including:
•Infotainment Systems
•Telematics Control Units (TCU)
•Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS)
•Car Audio Amplifier Systems
•Consumer Audio Products
•Analyze cost breakdowns from supplier quotes and understand all cost influent factors
•Build close technical relationships with suppliers to identify best cost solutions, including emerging companies and technologies that provide cost advantages
•Develop software licensing and development services sourcing strategies that establish the considerations necessary to evaluate licensing model alternatives and enable on-going evaluation of HARMAN's software supply base
•Work with Engineering & Product Sourcing teams during new business quoting to establish reference cost targets
•Support Procurement teams during negotiating events with HARMAN's software suppliers
•Establish a process to train HARMAN Engineering & Product Sourcing teams on Design-to-Cost best practices
Basic Qualifications:
•Minimum 15 yrs work experience in the following areas:
•Embedded software development
•Software licensing and development services procurement
•Embedded software program management
•Highly analytical approach to problem-solving with demonstrated knowledge of product cost drivers and options to influence product costs
•Excellent presentation skills and demonstrated ability to effectively present complex technical topics to senior and executive leadership
•Experience working in a fast-paced, highly measured, results-focused environment
Preferred Qualifications:
•Master's degree in computer science or software engineering is preferred
•Experience with automotive products is highly desirable, including experience working with automotive software suppliers (e.g., Vector)
•Experience with embedded system development is strongly preferred
•Experience assessing trade-offs between open source and proprietary software solutions is beneficial
•Experience with 3rd party software consulting and engineering service providers is beneficial, including familiarity with industry standard development rates
•Demonstrated knowledge of software licensing models and associated royalty structures
•Demonstrated ability to drive results through the appropriate construction and use of metrics that effectively measure outcomes
•Proven team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills who can effectively work with all levels of a global matrixed organization
•Accepts overall accountability for work assignments
•Able to adapt to changing demands and conditions
Eligibility Requirements:
•Willingness to travel 20%
