Department Summary
The LVD Engineering department at Consumers Energy produces quality, expert and efficient design services within scope and on-time to internal and external clients, to provide safe and reliable electric service to our customers. LVD Engineering is responsible for utility electrical distribution designs 25kV and below, from distribution substation exits to the customer meter.
Job Description/Responsibilities
Primarily responsible for electric distribution system design for the Low Voltage Distribution (LVD) Engineering, the LVD Engineering Circuit Engineer will design projects as approved through the LVD Planning department, and as required for new business requests approved through the Customer Energy Management department.
The Circuit Engineer is assigned leadership opportunities as well, participating in departmental initiatives, technical reviews and approvals, mentoring of newer employees, and a variety of other leadership and business opportunities.
Key Responsibilities in this area include:
•Design electric distribution systems for customer relocation, capacity projects, failures or reliability improvement projects
•Design various new business projects, including line extensions (primary, secondary) and services for various customer types (residential, commercial, industrial, developments)
•Design in a CAD system
•Review designs of others for quality, constructability, and conformity of standards
•Lead and participate in special initiatives for continuous improvement in LVD Engineering and cross functionally with other departments.
•Mentor and train new employees and interns
•Identify other pole attachments
•Negotiate with customers to obtain easements, working with the Right of Way department as necessary
•Work with government entities and our Permitting department for permits
•Create projects and/or orders and order materials in SAP
•Communicate work to internal departments (LVD Planning, Forestry, Long and Short Range Scheduling, Field/Construction, Closeout, etc.)
•Create billing invoices
•Obtaining field notes outdoors, and at times, work in remote areas on uneven terrain and/or in difficult-to-access locations
Additionally, this LVD Engineering Circuit Engineer role may serve as the Third Party Coordinator. That is, the Circuit Engineer is the company representative in negotiations with cities, townships, villages, and engineering firms regarding road relocations, storm sewer rebuilds, bikes paths, and any other governmental agency projects. This activity requires meeting with agencies and negotiating the extent of this work in order to minimize Consumers Energy's investment.
This position will be located out of the Battle Creek Service Center.
Required Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Essential Functions
Planning, design, construction, and maintenance of Electric and Gas Distribution and Electric Generation systems as well as facilities and ancillary support process for all utility operations. Duties and who this individual reports to will fluctuate between projects, Practice Areas, and offices. Individual possesses the skills lead, problem solve, and work well in a team environment. Individual should exemplify safe work practices and follow the company's compliance standards. Lead and/or assist with engineering projects to include design, plans, inspections, system planning, specifications, reports, maps, environmental impacts, permits, contracts, schedules, estimates, surveying, easements, data collection, construction observation, and field investigation. Provide engineering services with accuracy, integrating all applicable governmental and company laws, standards and procedures on time and under budget.
