Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are at all times consistent with the standards contained in the Mission, Vision and Values of Covenant and the commitment to Keeping our Promise of Caring. The NP will function in a supervised and independent capacity with the Covenant HealthCare physician team. Supervision, where necessary, will be provided by the practice s designated supervising physician.
The NP has accountability for assisting with the management, coordination, and supervision of the Medical Oncology Practice. The NP performs physical examinations, confers with patients in person and by phone/electronically, collaborates with others in the department to assure smooth flow of patient care consistent with established quality indicators and participates in the overall coordination of patient care. Establishes and maintains communication with other health care providers and departments to ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness and to promote consistency and continuity of care. The NP establishes effective working relationships with members of the health care team, patients, and families. Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols, remaining calm, informing appropriate persons, and documenting events. Demonstrates knowledge of legal issues, including patient confidentiality and risk management in all aspects of patient care. Participates in Performance Improvement activities. Demonstrates proficiency in the use of computers and telecommunication modalities to document, track and convey information.
Responsibilities:
Strong patient assessment skills; taking medical history, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, performing physical exam and treating illnesses and injuries.
Schedule and track chemotherapy.
Evaluate laboratory results for Okay to Treat
Symptom management and triage of patients.
Perform hospital H&P s, Discharge Summaries and subsequent care.
Prescribe medication within the scope of licensure and facility limitations.
Educate patients on conditions, treatments, and risk factor modification.
Assist physician with hospital inpatient admission, consultations and discharges under direct supervision. Assists with inpatient rounding.
Update physician regarding patient status, test results and new admissions.
Assist with patient paperwork such as disability forms, prior authorizations, and prescription refills.
Supervise Infusion Therapy Center
Oversee clinical staff and sign orders (imaging, medication, and laboratory).
Provide patient education.
Work closely with specialty pharmacies and insurance companies.
Cover physician vacation and sick call.
Participates and/or directs regulatory activities in compliance with CLIA, HFAP, OSHA, EMTALA, and Corporate Compliance/Covenant guidelines.
Assist Office Manager/Coordinator in developing clinical protocols and programs for practice.
Assist in program development
-Survivorship Program
-Genetic Counseling
-Palliative Care
Timely coding and documentation of services provided.
Works with key community partners (primary care providers, specialists, community health workers, etc.) Where appropriate, identifies and creates opportunities to enhance relationships and communication.
Participates in outreach programs/activities and community health fairs.
Other information:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Current Licensure to practice in the State of Michigan.
Graduate from an accredited institution.
Certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
Continuing medical education as required by the certification body.
AOCNP Certifiation or willing to obtain
ACLS Certification or willing to obtain within 6 months of employment
Required: Three to Five (3-5) years experience as a NP
Preferred: One (1) year of recent experience as a NP providing care for cancer and/or hematological conditions.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Knowledge in Oncology (specifically Medical Oncology).
Knowledge of Covenant systems, policies and procedures.
