Department Summary
The Field Technical Services group consists of a team of Engineers and Engineering Technical Analysts who provide technical leadership to support management, testing, and maintenance of transformers, breakers and other equipment in over 1,150 substations and Electric Equipment Repair Center, as well as the Metro underground electric systems throughout the state. The team maintains and improves system reliability through equipment testing, analysis of test results, acceptance testing, determination of equipment fitness for service, other troubleshooting, and technical assistance and development of testing and repair procedures. The team is involved in operation, maintenance and construction activities, specifically dealing with equipment installation, operation, inspection and repair. Compliance with applicable NERC standards is ensured through routine and commissioning inspections and documentation.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The Field Technical Services Engineering Technical Analyst applies applicable background/experience, preferably in electric substation operation, maintenance, and construction activities. The analyst will be responsible for conducting Substation Infrared and Corona inspections, electrical testing of substation equipment and interpreting the results, assisting crews with inspections and troubleshooting substation equipment. The analyst will communicate effectively with operational groups, engineering teams, and other utility representatives, as well as communicate technical information. Further, the Field Technical Services Analyst will work with vendors, company leaders, and other industry leaders to maintain an understanding of industry best practices and incorporate what is beneficial to the proper treatment of system equipment from an ownership perspective. The analyst usually works out of doors in all seasons occasionally working extended days, nights, holidays, and weekends. The position may require some travel in state to substations. The analyst may occasionally work in confined spaces, dirty locations, on the top of transformers or on substation structural steel. The analyst frequently works independently of colleagues, yet is required to frequently collaborate with others.
Key Responsibilities:
•Increase/maintain level of reliability of electric substation and metro equipment
•Support substation equipment preparation for installation, operation, inspection, and repair
•Meet with customers to communicate technical issues regarding substation equipment
•Provide technical support to the Electric Substation Operations and Maintenance department for program and demand maintenance and capital construction of substation equipment
•Equipment testing and analysis of test results, acceptance testing, determination of equipment fitness for service
•Equipment troubleshooting

•Equipment modifications (such as: Aurora breakers and reclosers, ABB breaker trip mechanisms, Nova recloser tank/venting, S&C Series 2000 trip latches, Southern States SOGS, LTC Spring Replacements)
•S&C Series 2000 SF6 low gas target inspection
•SF6 gas breaker testing, gas leak repair, and breaker replacement
•Substation, NERC, and other infrared inspections
•Substation spill cleanup and citations support
•NERC inspections (routine and commissioning)

The Field Technical Services Engineering Technical Analyst is expected to leverage strong oral and written communication skills and customer relations skills and work across all levels of the organization in order to be successful. They should be self-motivated, organized, flexible, and have the ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities. The selected candidate should have previous experience in substation maintenance, operations or construction and a valid Driver's License
The preferred location for this position will be location at the Battle Creek Service Center. Kalamazoo and Jackson Service Centers may also be considered.
