Department Summary
As a Substation Construction Field Leader (a/k/a Electric Short Cycle Project Leader), you will join a team responsible for construction of new Substations and enhancements to existing Substations. The position requires planning, organizing, coordination, and supervision of construction activities associated with HVD and Distribution Substations. In this position, you will provide oversight / direction to a contracted workforce and will interface with multiple workgroups internal and external to Consumers Energy.
The Field Leader will effectively organize and simultaneously lead multiple projects ranging in size and value. Although non-typical, projects can range upwards of $8M. You will be responsible to meet cost, schedule, scope of work, and work within the project management process.
Job Description/Responsibilities
•Precisely define the scope of the project; creating a "Request for Proposal (RFP)," defining the project schedule, coordinating internal and external resources, and overall project management.
•Provide planning, coordination, oversight / direction to ensure regulatory and environmental compliance and completion of planned construction of Transmission and Distribution Substations in a safe and cost effective manner.
•Frequent the construction site to ensure environmental compliance, safe work practices, monitor and report progress, and verify the end product meets the desired project outcomes.
•Ensure compliance of all CE applicable safety requirements and regulations pertaining to work within an energized substation and adherence to working clearances.
Requirements and Qualifications
•Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel) and SAP proficiency.
•High school diploma / GED (required).
AND
•Successful completion of the following within 12 months of starting your new role:
•LVD and HVD Switching and Tagging Training.
•DEQ Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans and Soil Management Guidelines Training.
•Asbestos Awareness Training.
•Confined Space Awareness Training.
The following experience / skills will set you apart from others:
•Ability to read Electrical Wire Diagrams and Civil and Layout Construction Drawings.
•Familiarity with construction practices for substation construction, including civil work such as foundations, grading, drain installations, and steel structure erection.
•Field operations and/or construction experience.
•Substation background.
•Five or more years of leadership experience.
•Project Management experience or PMP Certification.
Essential Functions
•Project scoping, planning and interpretation of design documents.
•Must be able to work independently with minimal Direct Supervision.
•Strong leadership and safety skills, negotiation skills, and use of wireless technology, and strong computer skills are required along with an ability to travel as the work location requires.
•Support Storm Restoration efforts as needed.
Hours and Travel
•This position requires the individual to work a minimum of 40 hours per week with a majority of the time spent at specific field locations.
•Additional hours are required as necessary to meet deadlines, complete emergent work or assist with storm restoration activities.
•This position requires the individual to work outside of their assigned headquarters to augment Construction workload and to assist with storm restoration activities which may require overnight stays.
•Year-round travel to and from job sites and project meetings could be significant dependent upon location.
•You would typically spend 70% of your time in the field or working in remote locations.
•You will spend 30% of your time in an office setting.
