Position Summary
The Lyman Briggs College (LBC) at Michigan State seeks an innovative and enthusiastic professional committed to the mission of a living learning community to serve as an Academic Advisor. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Student Success and Advising, the Academic Advisor will join a team of 6 advising professionals and help promote inclusion and diversity through advising, new student orientation, and support of students. We are seeking a student-centered professional to join our team who approaches the work with adaptability, creativity, and enthusiasm.
This hire is part of college-wide new programs and initiatives focused on advancing DEI&B: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. We believe that this agenda is best advanced by a college of faculty, advisors, staff, and students with varied perspectives and lived experiences, in order to challenge biases and conventions in academia, promote innovation, and educate future generations.
The primary roles of this position include:
ACADEMIC ADVISING (70%): Foster student development through thoughtful conversations, empathy for students’ individual paths, and engaged listening. Advise students on course selection and progress toward graduation, exploration of high impact learning practices, and personal and professional development. Refer students, as necessary, to other University units for assistance with education, career, and personal concerns. Promote a community committed to inclusion and productive dialogue for students through individual student development and programming.
NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION (30%): Coordinate the program development of new student orientation for Lyman Briggs students. Serve as liaison with the New Student Orientation office. Manage student staff support as part of orientation. Coordinator SSA team responsibilities during orientation. Manage and develop organization of student records and reporting as part of orientation. Develop communication with incoming students, in partnership with LBC communication staff.

Bachelor’s Degree

1-3 years of full-time and post-graduate work experience

Experience working with students from high school to college age.

Willingness to travel, both in-state and out-of-state

Ability to accommodate a changeable work schedule, including some evenings and weekends during peak recruitment and/or advising times of the year.
Desired Qualifications

Master’s Degree in student affairs, educational administration, counseling, or related field.

Background in new student orientation or first year experience, with skills in developing relationships with prospective and current students and families.

Background in supporting and developing students from diverse backgrounds, including race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, and ability.

Ability to manage large scale projects, events, and programs.

Background in the sciences, technology, or interdisciplinary STEM fields.

Understanding of the benefits of a small, residential learning environment.

Commitment to one’s own growth and development as a professional in student affairs.

Strong communication skills, including the ability to adapt message to a variety of audiences. Familiarity with a variety of communication strategies, including social media.

Strong collaboration skills. Ability to partner with both internal and external stakeholders.

Founded in 1967, LBC is a vibrant undergraduate residential college of Michigan State University focusing on the study of the sciences in their societal and global contexts (https://lbc.msu.edu).
