Position Summary
This is a part-time, temporary position scheduled to last for up to one year. The primary schedule will be 2nd shift on the main campus in Flint.
This position is part of a team of employees that work together to help fulfill the mission and goals of the Department of Public Safety (DPS). This team, and the certified/sworn police officer, is responsible for maintaining the peace and security of the campus. The certified/sworn police officer acts as a liaison with federal, state and local police and fire officials.
Responsible for enforcement duties for the protection, safety and welfare of students, faculty, staff and visitors and all property within the area under the control and jurisdiction of Mott Community College. Given the nature of the position, this position is responsible for crucial confidential data. S/he is expected to exercise sound judgment on issues that arise.
This position, under general supervision, preserves the peace; protects life and property; prevents and detects crimes; enforces laws and ordinances; and maintains a public service approach towards the community, and performs other job related duties as assigned.
1.Ensure the safety and security of the campus visitors and facilities by patrolling the campus in order to observe the conduct and activities that take place on the premises.
2.Provide information and general assistance to the students, faculty, staff, and other visitors of the College by being visible, approachable and available. In this regard, the certified/sworn police officer serves in a public relations capacity.
3.Conduct preliminary investigations and, following appropriate procedures, document and report the outcome of the investigations.Minimum Requirements
1.Associate's Degree or employee must complete Associate's degree within sixteen (16) consecutive semesters or sessions following his/her effective date of hire (continued employment will be contingent upon successful completion of Associate's degree).
2.Graduate of a Police Academy within the past three (3) years and/or possess three (3) years of experience as a certified/sworn police officer within the past five (5) years.
3.Current Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certification or be certifiable prior to job posting deadline.
4.Must maintain a valid Michigan driver's license and have a good driving record for the past five years. A good driving record must be maintained while employed as a Certified/Sworn Police Officer.
5.Must maintain State of Michigan mandated firearms qualification.
6.Demonstrated dependability, reliability, professionalism, and ethical behavior.
7.Ability to work successfully in a high stress environment, handling multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
8.Excellent judgment skills in terms of interpersonal communications and ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work situations.
9.Demonstrated knowledge and ability to apply constitutional law, substantive criminal law, criminal procedure, juvenile law, the law of evidence, criminal and non-criminal investigation techniques, court functions and civil law, crime scene processing, patrol procedures and techniques, civil liability, criminal and non-criminal report writing, court testimony procedures, parking violations and ticket writing procedures, motor vehicle accident investigation and preparation of the Uniform Traffic Accident Report, and physical security procedures.
10.Knowledge of physical security procedures.
11.Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with staff, students and the public with tact and courtesy. Effective oral and written communication skills.
