ArtWorks is a 5 week program (July 10 – August 11) that serves young adults ages 14-18, pairing groups
of students with local art and design professionals on a project for a local non profit, business, or
organization. This year's projects include community murals and graphic design branding initiatives. This
program challenges students to investigate their ideas, learn from their mistakes, and challenge
themselves towards new levels of creativity.
UICA is looking for two Lead Instructors who will work with UICA in order to plan the curriculum, produce
the work, and train and mentor youth in order to complete one of these two projects. This is a temporary
position, with a maximum of 125 hours for the duration of the program.
Hours: Maximum 125 hours, June 20 - August 11, 2017
Characteristic Duties
The Lead Instructor will be responsible for training and mentoring the students of the project team, and
supervising the design, execution and completion of one of the two projects. The Lead Teacher will work
with the youth project team from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, Monday through Thursday, from July 10 – August
11, 2017. This includes 4 hours of direct contact time per day (M-Th) with the youth and one hour of prep
each day.
Responsibilities
Lead Instructors and the youth project team will work closely with the potential Project Partner and UICA
to achieve the desired design and themes for production and completion of the creative work or works. A
Project Plan subject to approval by UICA will be required once the Lead Teacher has been selected. The
Lead Teacher and one Program Assistant will be chosen at the beginning of each Project.
Staff is required to attend a Program Staff orientation and planning day, date to be determined. Staff
attendance is also mandatory for the ArtWorks Student Orientation day on Tuesday, June 27, 2017.
Required Qualifications
Required Education
- Bachelors Degree in Art/Design
Required Work Experience
- Evidence of ongoing scholarly and/or creative activity, such as regional/national exhibition record
and commitment to personal artistic or creative practice
Preferred Qualifications
- K-12 Certified Educator
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience working with/mentoring/teaching youth ages 14 and up
- Ability to express ideas clearly in writing and images
- Active members of the creative community
- Masters Degree in Art, Design, Art Education or related field.
