Department Summary
We aren't looking for a Tax Analyst. That sounds like a boring job. We are looking for an Energy Tax Guru with 2 to 5
years of experience who wants to specialize in the rapidly changing energy industry. The Tax Guru we need has a base
understanding of tax principles; including corporate tax return preparation, accounting for income taxes, and basic tax
research. The Tax Guru we are seeking must be excited by the opportunity to use technology to solve puzzles with
numbers. But even more importantly, we are looking for a future leader of the tax organization. Leaders in the tax
organization are hard-working, display initiative, communicate well with others, and are life-long learners.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The Energy Tax Guru is a unique position within the Company that will be rapidly exposed to the energy industry. On a
rotational basis the Tax Guru will prepare complicated federal and state tax returns, perform tax accounting, and calculate
tax depreciation using complex systems. The Tax Guru may also be introduced to the unique world of energy regulation
by assisting in public service commission filings, helping prepare complicated rate cases, and responding to regulator
audit questions.
Hours and Travel
This will not be an easy job and some overtime may occasionally be required. However, we also feel strongly that work life
balance is important and so we offer flexible work arrangements that allow you to occasionally work from home or enjoy 3
day weekends. Because Tax Gurus need to be life-long learners, we will be investing in your training and development.
On occasion you will need to travel to attend off-site training sessions. You may also need to travel to offsite meetings and
between Company locations.
Requirements/Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or finance related degree;
CPA or Masters of Taxation preferred;
2+ years tax experience in a public accounting (Big 4 preferred) or corporate tax environment;
Base understanding of corporate tax preparation, accounting for income taxes, and tax research;
Experience and comfort with complicated systems and technology; and
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
This job will be filled commensurate with the candidates successful education and experience.
Overview
The Tax Analyst Job Family is utilized primarily in the Tax department. Performing all of the Tax functions for the
Company including but not limited to: monthly, quarterly, and year-end tax return and statement preparation and analysis;
budgeting, forecasting, tax statement preparation and analysis; tax compliance SOX, and other compliance roles; support
business decision making with budgets, forecasts, cost analysis, and performance reporting such as KPIs, project
analysis, ROI, NPV, and IRR.
Nature of Work
The essence of the work that is performed by the Tax Analyst Job Family is a wide variety of Tax analysis, involving
following the IRS tax code and generally accepted Tax practices and using accepted tax theory.
At the lowest level in this job family, the work performed may tend to be of a routine and less complex nature where the
work responsibilities can be proficiently performed after a relatively short training period.
At the highest levels in this job family the work performed will tend to be of a complex nature involving knowledge of
various functional/specialized disciplines where the work responsibilities can only be proficiently performed after a
relatively long training / experience-related time period and often requires an advanced degree. The work environment
often includes dealing with risk and limiting exposure.
Leadership, management, facilitation and interaction with senior management will be markedly increased at the mid -
highest levels of this job family while the need for direction and supervision will be markedly decreased. While problem
solving and analysis will likely be required at all levels, recommendation and implementation becomes the norm at the
highest levels and will often have a major bearing on the company's business. In addition, skills such as the ability to
think on your feet, composure under fire and effective communication across all levels of the organization and with outside
stakeholders become more finely honed at the higher levels.
