Job Description/Responsibilities
This position is for a full time chemistry technician in the Chemistry Department of Laboratory Services. The chemistry
laboratory provides organic, inorganic, waste characterization, industrial hygiene, and transformer oil sampling and
analysis services to its internal and external customers, in a fast paced working environment with changing priorities to
meet business needs.
In this position, the chemistry technician serves two functions, one of which requires travel to locations throughout the
Lower Peninsula and the other function is within the laboratory building. One of the primarily responsibilities is to provide
field assistance for sampling of ground water, surface water, electrical insulating fluids, industrial waste materials, soil and
air using standard methodologies.
Support will also be provided for selected lab processes, including but not limited to the following: Sample pick-up and
instate, sample preparation and analysis for organic and inorganic parameters based on EPA, ASTM and SM methods,
identification of asbestos and fiber counting by microscope, sample analysis through traditional wet chemistry, and data
entry.

Have basic mechanical skills in order to effectively troubleshoot and apply corrections. Have suitable laboratory skills
with an understanding of how to apply scientific principles. Will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in water quality
measurements and asbestos determinations.
Has the ability to interpret and closely follow chemistry work procedures.
This position will be located at the Jackson Trail Street location.
Requirements/Qualifications
A two-year associate degree in the requisite scientific or technical field (48 scientific or technical credit hours as
measured on a semester basis). The 48 scientific or technical credit hours can be obtained through colleges, technical
institutes, licensed apprenticeship programs, trade schools, military programs, etc.
1+ years of combined experience in environmental field sampling and associated testing laboratory situations
The following skills will set you apart from others:
Current 24 hour Hazwoper certification
Completion of formal coursework in sample collection with progress towards "Certified Environmental Sampler", or its
equivalent
Familiarity with a Laboratory Management Information System (LIMS) as it applies to environmental testing
Experience with the application of laboratory quality systems in order to comply with accreditation requirements
Working knowledge of SAP
Proficiency in MS Office Suite Applications
This position will be filled at the appropriate salary grade from the technician job family based upon the skills, knowledge,
and experience of the selected candidate.
