In every single case it is the Red Cross’ mission to help people affected by disaster meet their emergency needs that include shelter, food, clothing, and health and mental health services. As a paid staff member, you will support our loyal Red Cross disaster volunteers who serve selflessly to provide a bridge of assistance until individualsand families can resume a normal life.Ourdisaster volunteers are the heart and soul of our mission torespond to emergencies and provide relief to victims of disasters.They serve in a number of capacities, including Disaster ActionTeam Member, Disaster Assessment, Caseworker,Mass Care Feeding,Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) Driver, ShelterManager/Staff,Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health.
We are currently seeking a Disaster Program Specialist forour Detroit, Michigan Chapter. As a Disaster Program Specialist, the shift is 8AM-5PM but the selected candidate needs to be flexible to cover disasters, weekend events and travel as requested for deployment and training. Job Summary:
Responsible for the implementation of the disaster services program in anassignedgeographic territory. The territory is based on the regional configuration. Leads and manages a primarily volunteer team responsiblefor the implementation of disaster preparedness, response,and recoveryprograms in the local area. Ensures the development of DisasterLeadership Volunteers in each of theprogramsupport functional areas ofthe disaster cycle in orderto meet the needs of the territory, region,state and division.Operates as apartof the DisasterManagement Cycle processes. Responsible forlocalpreparation,response and recovery management as well asmanagementof government partnerships with assigned territory.
Drivers for thiswork include the number of municipalities within its coverage area,the amount andcomplexity of program activity, presence ofsignificant grant funding,geography, risk,population,frequency ofevents, and regionalstructure. Performs thesefunctions according tothe guidance provided by the DisasterProgramManager; teamleadership is provided by theDisaster Program Manager. This position reportsdirectly to theDisaster ProgramManager and may have a dotted line toCommunity Exec (s) in theterritory they cover. Thisposition may have dotted linesupervisionto program support functions within the Region and/or may also serve as a program support function lead within the Region. This position works closely with, is supported by andreceives technical guidance from program supportfunctions at the regional level.Responsibilities:1.Act in a facilitative leader role across the disaster cycle: theRed Cross will align with government and work to enable the entire community to participate in all phases of the disaster cycle by shifting from being not only a provider of direct services but also a facilitative leader.2. Within scope of position, represents the entire disaster cycle of preparedness, response and recovery.3. Ensures that American Red Cross services are available to diverse communities.4.Mobilizes the local community to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. Meets the needs and expectations of clients and stakeholders. Develops human and material resources (volunteers, partners, community agencies, shelter and vendor agreements etc) to ensure the full cycle of disaster services is delivered.5. Manages local responses by the deployment volunteers on a daily basis in a rapid and accessible manner. Servesduring times of disaster as the operational leadership for theterritory/local level; Participates in a leadership role on larger operations regionally, division ornationwide6.Leads and manages a primarily volunteer teamresponsible for the implementation of disaster preparedness,response,and recoveryprogramsin the local area.
