Department Summary
The Generation Technical Skills Department is responsible for developing and delivering technical skills training to generation and gas compression workers. This training consists of electrical, instrumentation and control, and mechanical training to Generation Plant Electricians, Renewable Specialists, Laborers, Millwrights, Machinists, Electrical Repair Persons, Station Mechanics, and more.
Job Description/Responsibilities
This Technical Instructor is responsible for delivering Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, and other technical skills to Consumers Energy generation employees including coal plants, renewable and hydro generation, and gas compression stations. The individual in this position will actively participate in the learning community to increase consistency in Consumers Energy training practices and the effectiveness of the learning function. The Learning Specialist will proactively manage internal resources and creatively plan and execute training events within Consumers Energy that reflect and balance the priorities and resources of the company. Training will be delivered in classroom, lab, plant/station environment and/or virtual settings.
Key responsibilities for the Learning Specialists will include:
Deliver training in accordance with all applicable codes and standards via multiple formats including: classroom, lab, plant/station environment, business support coaching, and virtual settings.
Coordinate with supervisor and team to schedule and instruct courses in accordance with the needs of the business.
Proactively identify learning opportunities in support of business objectives and performance goals while continually monitoring and improving the quality and effectiveness of instruction delivery. Work in collaboration with an Instructional Designer to develop and revise courses around these opportunities.
Effectively utilize the LMS (learning management system), file management system, and other tracking and delivery tools.
Maintain a safe and clean work environment demonstrating all safety related policies and procedures.
Periodically observe or work alongside front-line staff to ensure subject matter expertise is maintained.
Actively participate on various training committees served by this department and act as a liaison to communicate information between those training committees, students, and technical skills team.
Develop skills and knowledge in additional technical areas, soft skills, and non-technical areas to have the ability to deliver training in those areas.
This opportunity's preferred location is Bay City, but consideration will be given at JH Campbell Training Center in West Olive or Alma so long as there is space available.
Required Qualifications:
6 years of industrial maintenance experience including hydraulics, pneumatics, pipe fitting, and lubrication
Advanced knowledge of hoisting and rigging safety, mobile and overhead cranes, and scaffolding safety
Advanced understanding of electrical safety and theory
Associates Degree in technical field or equivalent experience
Basic knowledge of MiOSHA rules and regulations
Basic knowledge of the National Electric Code
Knowledge of generation power plant systems
Knowledge of gas compression station systems
Strong facilitation and classroom management skills
Preferred Qualifications:
Journeyman Electrician License or completion of recognized apprenticeship
Strong background in industrial electronics, electrical installation, and electrical construction
Welding certifications
Machinist skills including lathe and mill operations
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
