Department Summary
The Facilities Engineering and Design team has overall responsibility for maintaining the standards, design and professional oversight throughout construction phases for new facilities/buildings. The team is also responsible for any on-demand maintenance of Consumers Energy facilities. The small team serves as subject matter experts (SMEs) for all electrical and mechanical operations and ensures adherence to NERC/FERC requirements.
Job Description/Responsibilities
As a member of the Facilities Engineering and Design staff, the Facilities Mechanical Engineer is responsible for all engineering functions required to manage the corporation's mechanical system assets. This includes but not limited to analysis and design of mechanical systems, consulting, troubleshooting mechanical operating systems, preparation of mechanical system Preventive Maintenance Procedures, writing performance specifications, writing system design criteria, certain mechanical system inspection processes, drawing reviews, and selected construction management duties. The position also includes life cycle cost evaluations, long-range strategic planning support functions, budgeting and scheduling activities, and preparation of annual objectives and work plans.
Key Responsibilities include:
Coordinate with project team members/stakeholders to ensure all work is properly assigned and conducted
Provide professional oversight of engineers, both internal and contracted resources, to ensure standards and designs are met.
Responsibility for the oversight, supervision, planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of mechanical engineering work.
Performs technical studies, design review of specifications and technical plans, construction compliance with design, quality assurance, commissioning and testing; making decisions independently and applying intensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the mechanical field.Subject Matter Expert for Facilities mechanical & Plumbing systems and mechanical engineering solutions.
Responsible for HVAC programs for all service centers and corporate facilities - including inspection and service contract oversight, reviews of PM procedures for accuracy and completeness, site visits for quality control and training purposes, and consultation with maintenance personnel when problems and/or questions arise.
Proactively communicate with leadership
Manage multiple projects, initiatives and activities
Identify, analyze and recommend corrective actions to technical issues identified during project execution or initial operation.
Plans and formulates HVAC engineering operational standards and develops preventive maintenance procedures for HVAC Systems statewide.
Perform benchmarking evaluation of utility costs statewide.
Regularly visit project sites to review project status, perform project site walk downs, perform job safety and quality observations, review project status, etc.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from anABET accredited university
4+ years of experience as an engineer
Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, Projects and PowerPoint
Experience with AutoCAD
Knowledgeable of the design, construction, or operation of facilities
Knowledge of planning and permitting as they relate to discipline specific design and construction
Experience in reviewing designs to assure compliance with engineering design, applicable codes, constructability, industry and CE standards
Experience in procurement of engineered material, equipment and professional services
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer License highly preferred
LEED Professional Accreditation (LEED AP BD+C)
Experience in light industrial or commercial building systems
Experience with REVIT
Experience with Work Management Systems (e.g. SAP, Oracle, etc.)
Masters or other advanced degree, ideally in Mechanical Engineering
The position is located at the corporate headquarters in Jackson, MI and requires travel to Consumers Energy facilities located throughout Michigan, Hybrid option is available. During the first 3 months of hire the selected candidate will be required to report to Jackson, MI.
